Why metal 3D printing?

  • Innovative designs enabled for lightweight or consolidated parts, performance improvements and customization
  • Improved efficiencies and economics

Why binder jetting?

  • Higher productivity from layer by layer process; less post-processing and no support removal required
  • Cost efficient by using metal powders from established global powder suppliers

Why HP Metal Jet 3D printing?

  • HP Thermal Inkjet printhead delivers economics and part quality (surface finish and accuracy)
  • Leverages IP from HP Latex and uses minimum binder agent allowing for thicker and larger mass parts

FAQs about metal 3D printing:

1. What is metal 3D printing?

Initially seen as a process for conceptual modeling and rapid prototyping, metal additive manufacturing (or metal 3D printing) has experienced significant expansion in the last five years.

It is now used for prototyping, tooling, and final part manufacturing in various sectors, such as industrial, healthcare, automotive, consumer, and sporting goods. Metal additive manufacturing has applications in many areas of our lives, with more innovative uses in development.

Metal additive manufacturing is one of the disruptive technologies, revolutionizing how we approach design and manufacturing. Everyone from artists and designers to individuals, small and medium-sized businesses, and large corporations uses metal additive manufacturing to produce a variety of products, from consumer goods to large-scale operations. Metal additive manufacturing is here to stay.

2. What is HP Metal Jet?

HP Metal Jet technology is an example of metal binder jetting. HP Metal Jet builds on three decades of experience in Thermal Inkjet (TIJ), to deploy multiple print bars for optimal productivity. Dual integrated printheads apply a fluid binder precisely to bond metal particles on the print bed. A layer thickness of 35 to 140 microns across a 1200 x 1200 dpi grid allows for fine detail with precise edge definition. The binder formulation eliminates the need for a secondary wax debinding stage, saving up to 20 hours of process time compared to metal injection molding16.

The HP Metal Jet 3D Printing Solution is a digitally driven metal 3D printing solution for mass production. It delivers high-quality 3D parts with mechanical properties that meet demanding industry standards, unlocking new designs. This solution is ideal for OEMs and component suppliers in industrial, healthcare, automotive, consumer, and other industries that want to accelerate metal manufacturing with increased design freedom and efficiently 3D print quality metal parts at scale.

3. What is the build volume of HP Metal Jet?

The effective build volume of HP Metal Jet17 is 430 x 309 x 170 mm. Meets MPIF standards for stainless steel with HP Metal Jet SS 316L and HP Metal Jet SS 17-4PH materials.

4. How much is HP Metal Jet?

The cost of HP Metal Jet 3D printed parts can vary based on the specific application and quantity needed. For more details on the cost per part or the HP Metal Jet 3D Printing Solution costs, please contact an HP Metal Jet 3D printing expert.

5. What metals can be used in 3D printing?

The vast array of materials available for Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) is always expanding. The most used materials for MAM include stainless steel, aluminium, nickel, cobalt-chrome, and titanium alloys. Some MAM equipment manufacturers offer custom specifications of these standard materials for use with their printer parameters. Discover the most commonly used metals and metal filaments for 3D printing, along with their respective pros and cons.

6. How does a metal 3D printer work?

Before choosing the right metal 3D printing process and machine for a specific application, it's crucial to understand the essential metal additive manufacturing technologies and processes and how they operate.

The choice of the right process and machine for your application wholly depends on various factors, including specifications, budget, and product lifecycle.

Disclaimers
  1. To achieve 4 times nozzle redundancy, nozzles are aligned so that four nozzles print the same 1/1200-inch dot row in the powder bed. This means up to four different nozzles can print HP Metal Jet binding agent in the same 1200 dpi grid point, helping to suppress defects. For more information, see https://www.hp.com/metaljet-whitepaper.

  2. Powder removal involves a mix of automated and manual processes, where trace amounts of loose powder may be lost.
