HP's bio-based and biomethane-powered 3D printing materials deliver carbon footprint reductions

HP 3D HR PA 11

In collaboration with Arkema HP has developed this bio-based material made from renewable castor oil and using biomethane for steam production. This partnership has achieved 46%  reduction3 in carbon footprint of 100% bio-based HP 3D HR PA 11 compared to previous iteration.

HP 3D HR PA 12 enabled by Evonik

Evonik has doubled down on sustainability by reducing HP’s 3D HR PA 12 enabled by Evonik material carbon footprint by 49%, compared to previous version4 of the material. This extraordinary reduction is achieved using renewable electricity and biomethane in the production of steam.

HP 3D High Reusability PA 11 life-cycle—from a resilient crop to high-performance material

Discover the transformative journey of the castor plant.

Grow of a castor

Castor grows in semi-arid,  marginal soils where few other crops can thrive. It requires limited amounts of water5 mainly supplied by local monsoons. It does not compete with food and does not contribute to deforestation.

The castor seeds are pressed to extract castor oil, which is chemically converted into 11-aminoundecanoic acid. This is then polymerized to create bio-based polyamides like the HP 3D HR PA 11, used in different 3D applications.

HP strengthens its commitment to minimizing environmental impact

HP's commitment to climate action is reflected in the integration of the HP 3D HR PA 12 enabled by Evonik, and HP 3D HR PA 11 with superior environmental  performance as the standard materials, maintaining product quality, performance, and price for customers.

Easily understand the environmental impact of your HP MJF 3D-printed parts. Just upload your part design, and the HP 3D Carbon Calculator6 will show you an estimation of  the carbon emissions generated, enabling you to make informed decisions.

Promoting waste reduction and circularity

HP is promoting circularity by encouraging the customers to use the recycling programs7 managed by external suppliers. Used powders are recycled for further use, helping to give a second life to the materials.

Commitment to plastic reduction

HP AM Solutions is committed to increasing the circularity of its packaging and reducing single-use plastics. See below for examples of these efforts:

  • HP has transformed the packaging of several service kits to be entirely fiber-based, replacing the foam by cardboard.
  • HP has improved the powder packaging of materials by simplifying the design and reducing non-essential components like plastics and layers of cardboard.

Footnotes and disclaimers

    1. Renewable sources used for HP 3D HR PA 11, material 100% made of castor oil that comes from castor seeds, and renewable energy used in the production of HP 3D HR PA 11, PA 12 and PA 12 FR.
    2. For testing, material is aged in real printing conditions and powder is tracked by generations (worst case for reusability). Parts are then made from each generation and tested for mechanical properties and accuracy.
    3. HP 3D HR PA11’s Carbon Footprint has been reduced by more than 46% according to IPCC 2013 V1.03, EF 3.0 Method (adapted) V1.00, Recipe Midpoint V1.13. LCA comparison provided by supplier. May 2021 vs. March 2023.
    4. VESTOSINT Z2723 (PA12)’s Carbon Footprint has been reduced by 49% according to ISO 14040/44 & ISO 14067. LCA comparison provided by supplier. March 2022 vs February 2024.
    5. The castor plant benefits from rainy seasons. Takes advantage of seasonal monsoon phenomenon.
