Simpsons Printing Commemorates Historic Flood with HP Latex Exhibit Graphics

To commemorate the lives lost and educate the community on the most destructive flood in South Dakota history, The Journey Museum and Learning Center in Rapid City sought to create a free-to-the-public exhibit1. Severe flooding of the Black Hills Flood occurred in 1972 when Canyon Lake Dam failed. According to the Red Cross, this resulted in 238 deaths and 3,057 injuries2. Over 1,335 homes and 5,000 automobiles were destroyed3, causing over $1 billion in damage in current dollars.

The Journey Museum and Learning Center brought in local print service provider Simpsons Printing to produce the exhibit graphics and exhibit signs. Simpsons Printing, utilizing the HP Latex 800 W large format printer, took on the meaningful job of designing, printing, and installing the 2597-square-foot exhibit in only three months.

Simpsons Printing worked with foam and PVC boards that could pop on and off the walls, allowing the nonprofit museum to reuse materials in the future. One of the biggest project challenges was wrapping a wall already covered with low-VOC paint. Additionally, with the exhibit scheduled to run over six months, floor decorations would have to withstand considerable foot traffic and maintain a like-new appearance.

With its ability to print the whitest white4 as well as leverage sustainable, water-based HP Latex inks and odorless prints without hazardous air pollutants5, the HP Latex 800 W was the perfect exhibit graphics and exhibit signs printer for the job.

“The unique challenge of this job was telling the story of the 1972 flood in a way that would honor the memories of all who were lost. The goal was to commemorate their memory and to show the resilience of our community over the past 50 years,” says Hayley Kaemingk, design team lead, Simpsons Printing. “The wide-format industry has a unique ability to engage and impact audiences. This expansive project allowed people to immerse themselves in the story being told. The community appreciated it as it was very meaningful and beautifully produced.”
