1939 — Bill & Dave
HP is formed by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard.
1940 — First Charitable Contribution
HP records its first charitable donation of $5 to a local organization that would eventually become Silicon Valley United Way.
1957 — First Objectives
HP’s first Corporate Objectives include “good citizenship—making contributions to the community and the environment in which we operate.”
1966 — Recycling Program
HP employee Walt Moy initiates a punched-card recycling program in Palo Alto for HP employees.
1991 — Planet Partners
HP launches Planet Partners for HP LaserJet print cartridge return and recycling.
2003 — Supplier Code of Conduct
HP creates its Supplier Code of Conduct to ensure partners meet standards for facility management, labor, health and safety, environmental policies, and ethics.
2008 — HP Suppliers List
HP becomes the first electronics company to publish a comprehensive list of its suppliers.
2013 — Complete Carbon Footprint
HP becomes the first global IT company to publish a Complete Carbon Footprint.
2015 — A New HP Is Born
HP Inc. launches as an independent company and immediately sets bold sustainability commitments: 100% renewable electricity in global operations, zero deforestation, and a 25% reduction in product portfolio GHG emissions by 2020.
2017 — Ocean-Bound Plastics
HP becomes the first to incorporate ocean-bound plastics into ink cartridges.
2022 - One Billion cartridges returned
HP reaches one billion Original HP print cartridges returned through its Planet Partners recycling program — one of the largest closed-loop recycling milestones in the technology industry.
2023 - HP Certified Refurbished
HP becomes the first OEM to launch a commercial PC refurbishment program, giving devices a second life.
2024 - SBTi Net-Zero Validation
HP's 2040 net-zero target receives official validation from the Science Based Targets initiative — making HP one of the first major technology companies with a full value-chain net-zero pathway approved by SBTi.
2025 - 82 Million people empowered
HP reaches 82.4 million people across 24 countries — providing technology, digital and AI skills training, and economic opportunity through Digital Hubs, HP LIFE, and global partnerships.
