If your screen returns after one of these steps, you’ve likely fixed it. If not, keep going below for more targeted solutions.
A black screen usually means one of three things:
The display isn’t working (connection or hardware issue)
Windows is running, but not rendering correctly
A recent update or driver change caused a conflict
The key is identifying when the black screen appears, because that determines the fix.
Symptoms:
You hear fan noise or Windows sounds
Keyboard lights respond
Screen stays black
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B
Wait for a screen flicker or beep
→ This refreshes the graphics subsystem instantly.
Press Windows + P
Press the down arrow
Hit Enter (repeat if needed)
→ Your laptop may be outputting to a non-existent external display.
Symptoms:
Black screen but mouse cursor is visible
This usually points to a Windows Explorer or login issue.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Click Task Manager
Select Windows Explorer
Click Restart
In Task Manager, click File → Run new task
Type explorer.exe
Press Enter
Symptoms:
Screen goes black before reaching Windows sign-in
Disconnect and reconnect all cables
Try a different HDMI/DisplayPort cable
Test with another monitor
→ Especially common with desktops or external monitors.
Hold the power button (10–15 seconds)
Wait 30 seconds
Turn the laptop back on
After several failed boots:
Select Advanced Options
Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced Options
Choose System Restore or Startup Repair
Symptoms:
Issue starts right after an update or driver install
Boot into Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Expand Display adapters
Right-click your GPU → Properties
Go to Driver → Roll Back Driver
Open Settings → Windows Update
Click Update history
Select Uninstall updates
Remove the latest update
Symptoms:
Laptop works, but screen fails when connected externally
Try a different cable
Switch ports (HDMI → USB-C)
Reset display with Windows + P
Safe Mode loads only essential drivers.
Force shutdown your PC 2–3 times
Enter Automatic Repair
Go to:
Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings
Press F4 (Safe Mode)
Once inside:
Update or roll back drivers
Uninstall problematic apps
If the problem started recently:
Open Automatic Repair
Select System Restore
Choose a restore point before the issue
If this isn’t a one-time issue, it may indicate a deeper problem:
Failing GPU
Overheating
Corrupt Windows installation
Faulty update loop
Run a full system diagnostic
Check temperatures
Back up your files immediately
Consider professional repair
If you notice:
Frequent crashes
Visual glitches before black screen
No response even after Safe Mode
It could be hardware failure.
At that point, upgrading to a newer system may be more cost-effective than repeated repairs.
A black screen can feel serious, but in most cases, it’s fixable in minutes with the right approach.
The key is simple:
Start with quick fixes
Identify the scenario
Apply the right solution without overcomplicating it
If you stay methodical, you’ll usually get your screen back without needing a full system reset.
