Rated 5 out of 5 by verypoorfarmer from One of the finest Products HP ever made The HP LaserJet 4, and the HP LaserJet 4 Plus, as well as most of the LaserJet small business-home-office-printers designed and built by HP in the early to mid 1990's are still functioning now with little care. These magnificent machines were built in defiance of industrial practices of planned obsolescence, and Vance Packard's [no relation to HP] explanation, which accurately describe the practice of extremely limited temporal usage as a business practice in "The Waste Makers" [1960]. Hewlett-Packard, on the other hand, built durable programmable handheld calculators, computer keyboards, drives, and other computer components and printers in the mid 1980's through the first decade of the twenty-first century to be durable and trustworthy equipment and devices. In their field, these devices came to be known as "bulletproof." Really, Bulletproof. These devices from an earlier era of HP, as such, are the HP LaserJet 4 and 4 Plus printers. These printers give the species hope of a future by building devices that last long enough to recover their original costs multiple times and therefore do not squander resources. My current HP LaserJet 4 Plus is over 20 years old, and working as well as it did when new. Ink cartridges are still available for them and should be for many years. The drivers are extant on HP's collective site, though I worry that management at HP will try to prevent their use ax time grinds on. These old workhorse printers will grind on longer than HP's management, so just use moderate compressed air pressures to blow them "clean" of dust or mud every few years. And download the drives to a secure place in memory, since the indexing currently presented on the main HP site makes them hard to locate. I won't divulge their exact locations for purposes of safety and driver preservation. [There are eight driver versions and you may have to download and test them with your newer OS's to find the right one for whatever OS you are using now!] Regretably, HP mgmt seems to be trying to make these old bulletproof printers vanish so that they can increase profit in producing new cheap lines of printers that have increased capabilities but almost no longevity. It is fortunate that the old drivers are still available, because Windows 8 kinds of operating systems do not the have the drivers for them in the library of drivers HP provides for microsoft to bundle in Windows 8. Sure, eventually when I need increased volume or capability or when the machine wears itself out -- I will get a new HP if I can find one that is not built with planned obsolescence as it's major design criteria. The old HP LaserJet 4 plus, is one of the most economically sensible investments I every made. . [That is stuff you can take to the bank.]
