HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 15z-ec200

Overall, this is a great laptop for normal use and some light to medium gaming at a good price. The CPU runs everything as fast as I can want, but the power consumption jumps A LOT if you start to max out on one thread or more. The GPU is quite fast, with the same expected power consumption, heat, and fan. On battery, it throttles back the CPU and GPU quite a bit and the fan profile is changed to reduce fan noise. I run Manjaro Linux (Xfce) on mine, and the installation went reasonably smoothly. The main kink was the missing drivers for the Realtek WiFi card, but I was able to find it online. It took a little bit of finagling to get the two GPUs to play nicely with one another. One thing that took me forever to figure out was getting the battery power consumption/time estimate to display. I booted Windows and noticed it didn't show it either. Turns out, there is a BIOS setting for this that was set to disabled, for some reason. Enabling it fixed this. Complaints: While plugged in, the fan tends to run a lot more, even when it isn't doing anything, which is kind of annoying. The battery is not stellar, but it can get 8-9 hours while doing something light like text editing. It drops to about 6 hours web browsing, and under 2-3 hours while gaming. I am not a fan of the weird shape, but you can't get a laptop with decent specs at this price that is not a 'gaming laptop,' so I bought it anyway. The material on the lid is the nasty plastic that fingerprints and doesn't wipe off, so it looks bad after less than a month of use.

This is my second HP, never had any problems with the previous one, I actually gave it to my son 2 years ago and he still uses it with no problems, I've heard HP has good quality from people who knows about computers and so far I agree with them. I love that I could build it to my needs, and for the features I was looking for specially a high end graphic card, HP had the best price in the market. I've only used it for few weeks and so far I'm loving it.

The gap in overall performance between this laptop and my last one is monumental. it's so much faster, the graphics are nice and the cooling is spectacular. I tested to see how much it could handle before getting warm by just setting it on my legs as I played and it stayed cool no matter what I did. Much better battery life than expected too. I assumed that it would die much quicker if it wasn't plugged in, since it's such a high performance laptop. but it lasts longer than all my other's. Performs better than my foster father's desktop I believe.
