A trackpad, also called a touchpad, is the flat, touch-sensitive surface below a laptop keyboard that controls the on-screen pointer. You move one finger to move the pointer, tap or press to click, and use two or more fingers for gestures like scrolling and switching apps. A trackpad replaces a mouse, so you can use your laptop anywhere without extra accessories.

In this laptop trackpad glossary, we explain how trackpads work, the most useful gestures, how to right-click, and how to turn your trackpad on or off. For more laptop terms, visit our laptop glossary.

What Is a Trackpad and How Does It Work?

A laptop trackpad works by sensing the small electrical charge in your fingertip. Under the surface is a grid of sensors that detects where your fingers touch, how many fingers are on the pad, and how they move. The laptop turns those signals into pointer movement, clicks, scrolling, and gestures.

How a capacitive trackpad senses your fingers

  1. The sensor grid creates an electric field. Thin rows and columns of conductive material sit under the trackpad surface.
  2. Your finger changes the field. Because your skin conducts electricity, touching the pad changes the charge at that spot.
  3. The controller finds the location. A small chip measures the change and calculates where each finger is.
  4. The laptop translates movement. The operating system turns finger position, speed, and number of fingers into pointer motion and gestures.

Because trackpads sense electrical charge, they respond to bare fingers but usually not to gloves, fingernails, or a regular stylus.

Trackpad vs. touchpad: is there a difference?

No, “trackpad” and “touchpad” mean the same thing. Windows uses “touchpad” in its settings, while many people and brands say “trackpad.” Both terms describe the touch-sensitive pointing surface on a laptop.

Types of laptop trackpads

Trackpad typeHow clicking worksWhat to know
Precision touchpadTap or press the surfaceThe Windows standard for smooth tracking and multi-finger gestures; found on most current Windows laptops
Mechanical clickpadThe whole pad physically presses down with a clickCommon on many laptops; the bottom area of the pad clicks most easily
Haptic touchpadPressure sensors detect a press, and a small motor creates the feel of a clickClicks the same anywhere on the pad; found on some premium laptops
Trackpad with physical buttonsSeparate left and right buttons above or below the padCommon on business laptops, often paired with a pointing stick in the keyboard

To check whether your Windows laptop has a precision touchpad, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. A line near the top says “Your PC has a precision touchpad” if it does.

Trackpad Gestures

Trackpad gestures are finger movements that perform actions without clicking menus. On a Windows 11 laptop with a precision touchpad, you can scroll with two fingers, zoom by pinching, switch apps with a three-finger swipe, and switch virtual desktops with a four-finger swipe. Gestures make a trackpad faster to use than a mouse for many everyday tasks.

Windows 11 trackpad gestures

GestureWhat it does
Tap with one fingerClick (select an item)
Tap with two fingersRight-click (open a menu)
Slide two fingers up or downScroll vertically
Slide two fingers left or rightScroll horizontally
Pinch or spread two fingersZoom out or in
Swipe three fingers upOpen Task View to see all open windows
Swipe three fingers downShow the desktop
Swipe three fingers left or rightSwitch between open apps
Tap with three fingersOpen Search
Swipe four fingers left or rightSwitch between virtual desktops
Tap with four fingersOpen the notification center
Double-tap and dragSelect and move an item or highlight text

Default gestures can vary by laptop and Windows version. Some HP laptops also add their own trackpad features through HP software.

How to customize trackpad gestures in Windows 11

  1. Open touchpad settings. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  2. Adjust taps and scrolling. Expand Taps or Scroll & zoom to turn gestures on or off and change scroll direction.
  3. Change multi-finger gestures. Expand Three-finger gestures or Four-finger gestures and choose what each swipe and tap does.
  4. Set cursor speed. Use the Cursor speed slider to make the pointer move faster or slower.

Trackpad gestures on a Chromebook

Chromebooks use similar gestures. Two fingers scroll, a two-finger tap right-clicks, a three-finger swipe up shows all open windows, and a four-finger swipe left or right switches desks. You can change touchpad settings in ChromeOS Settings under Device. Learn more about ChromeOS in our Chromebook glossary.

How to Right-Click on a Laptop Trackpad

To right-click on a laptop trackpad, tap the pad with two fingers at the same time. You can also press down on the bottom-right corner of the trackpad, or press the right button if your laptop has separate buttons. A right-click opens a shortcut menu with options like copy, paste, rename, and properties.

Right-click not working on a trackpad?

If two-finger tap doesn’t right-click, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad, expand Taps, and turn on Tap with two fingers to right-click. If pressing the corner doesn’t work, check that Press the lower right corner of the touchpad to right-click is turned on in the same menu. If neither option works, update your touchpad driver, as covered in the troubleshooting section below.

How to Turn a Laptop Trackpad On or Off

To turn a trackpad on or off in Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad and switch the Touchpad toggle. Many laptops also have a function key with a touchpad icon that turns the trackpad on or off, and some HP laptops let you double-tap the upper-left corner of the trackpad. Turning the trackpad off prevents accidental cursor jumps while you type or use a mouse.

Turn the touchpad on or off in Windows 11 settings

  1. Open Settings. Press the Windows key + I.
  2. Go to touchpad settings. Select Bluetooth & devices, then Touchpad.
  3. Switch the toggle. Turn Touchpad on or off.
  4. Optional: keep it on with a mouse. Check or uncheck Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected to control whether the trackpad turns off automatically when you plug in a mouse.

If your trackpad is off and you have no mouse, press the Windows key, type “touchpad,” and use the arrow keys, Tab, and Spacebar to reach and switch the toggle.

Trackpad Not Working? How to Fix It

If your laptop trackpad stops working, first make sure it hasn’t been turned off with a function key or in Windows settings. Then restart the laptop, clean the trackpad surface, and update the touchpad driver. Most trackpad problems come from a disabled setting, an outdated driver, or dirt and moisture on the pad.

Trackpad troubleshooting steps

  1. Check the touchpad toggle. Press the touchpad function key, or check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  2. Unplug external mice. Some laptops turn the trackpad off when a mouse is connected.
  3. Restart the laptop. A restart clears temporary software glitches.
  4. Clean the trackpad. Wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth; moisture, lotion, or dirt can make tracking jumpy.
  5. Update drivers. Use Windows Update or HP Support Assistant to install the latest touchpad driver and BIOS updates.
  6. Reinstall the driver. In Device Manager, uninstall the touchpad under Mice and other pointing devices or Human Interface Devices, then restart to reinstall it.

If the trackpad still doesn’t respond, the hardware may need service. A trackpad that lifts, feels uneven, or clicks on its own can also be a sign of a swelling battery underneath. Stop using the laptop and see our laptop battery guide for next steps.
