
Windows 10 Taskbar Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It
What is the Windows 10 taskbar?
- Provides access to the Start menu
- Displays icons for open and pinned applications
- Shows system tray icons for various settings and notifications
- Displays the date and time
Common Windows 10 taskbar problems and solutions
1. Declutter your taskbar
- Remove the search bar
- Hide Cortana
- Disable the Task View button
- Remove the People icon
- Turn off News and Interests
- Hide the touch keyboard button (if you don’t have a touchscreen)
- Remove the Windows Ink Workspace icon
2. Restart the Explorer process
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Click “More details” if you see a simplified view
- Find “Windows Explorer” under the Processes tab
- Right-click on it and select “Restart”

3. Enable auto-hide for the taskbar
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar
- Toggle on “Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode”
4. Check for Windows and driver updates
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
- Click “Check for updates”
- Install any available updates
5. Use PowerShell to fix a frozen taskbar
- Open the Start menu and search for “PowerShell”
- Right-click on PowerShell and select “Run as administrator”
- Copy and paste the following command:
- Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
- Press Enter and wait for the process to complete
- Restart your computer
6. Lock the taskbar in place
- Right-click on an empty area of the taskbar
- Make sure “Lock the taskbar” is checked
7. Recover a disappeared taskbar
- Move your cursor to the edge of the screen where the taskbar usually appears
- If you see a thin line, click and drag it to expand the taskbar
- If that doesn’t work, try restarting your computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally
8. Create a new user account or perform a system restore
- Create a new user account: Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users. Click “Add someone else to this PC”. Follow the prompts to create a new account.
- Perform a System Restore: Search for “Create a restore point” in the Start menu. Click “System Restore”. Choose a restore point from before the taskbar issues began.
