If you've forgotten your account password or need to change it, you'll need the email, Skype® username, or phone number originally associated with your Microsoft account to reset it. This process works the same way whether you're on Windows 10 or Windows 11, since it happens through your Microsoft account online, not through Windows itself.
Follow the steps in our video tutorial below to reset or update your Microsoft account password using an HP Windows 10 PC.
[Video tutorial placeholder — confirm this is still embedded correctly and re-record or re-link if it's Windows 10-only, since the steps now cover Windows 11 too.]
A Note on Windows 10 Support
Windows 10 reached the end of mainstream support on October 14, 2025. If your PC is enrolled in Microsoft's free consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, it will continue receiving security-only updates through October 12, 2027. After that, Windows 10 devices will no longer receive security patches at all, which makes password and account security guidance more important, not less, in the meantime.
If your PC is eligible, upgrading to Windows 11 is worth doing sooner rather than later. Browse HP laptops to see current Windows 11 models, or check Microsoft's Windows 10 ESU program details if you're not ready to move yet.
