Poor Communication
I was told by HP Support that our plotter would eventually need a new print head to prevent our issue from happening in the future. We discussed our options and purchased the new print head. I scheduled the repair with HP. The tech came and said he couldn't replace the print head unless the old one was actually damaged. We spent over $600 on HP's recommendation and then they wouldn't provide the service they recommended.

Easy and Effective Swap Unless Your Plotter is Full of Old Ink
This replacement was easy to do. It would've taken only a few minutes, except that the old printhead had leaked blank ink all over everywhere inside our plotter. It took probably an hour with an entire roll of paper towels and half a box of q-tips to clean out the inside of the plotter before we could install the new printhead. This is the second time this has happened with an HP plotter across two different models. I don't know what design flaw allows so much black ink to accumulate in the plotter before it becomes obvious via an error code or bad print quality, but it needs to be fixed. The ink had gelled up to the consistency of mayonnaise and stuck to everything. But again, once that was cleaned up, installing and configuring the new printhead took just a few minutes and got us back to printing in all four colors again.

Printhead replacement
The new printhead works good. I'm not sure why the first printhead went back to begin with though when it wasn't even 2 years old yet. The plotter isn't used every day either, so it's not like it was worn out. They aren't cheap either.

The print head looks the same and is acting the same as our previous 3+ year old printhead. We contacted support and they said they would send us a new part and someone to come out to install and but there is no plan in place yet.
