HP Digital Passport: One Scan, Infinite Possibilities

By Stacy Wolff, Senior Vice President of Design & Sustainability
January 4, 2026

I’m proud to lead an incredible team at HP that’s responsible for designing future solutions built to be smart, sustainable, and scalable. This year, we’ve seen a dramatic shift in how people view the PC, from a traditional productivity tool to a more adaptive, agentic companion. Customers today expect their devices to be simpler to set up, easier to understand, and more transparent about what they can do and how they’re built. And yet, many of the most helpful capabilities — like camera enhancements, audio tuning, security features, or device-specific shortcuts — often go unnoticed because people never realize they exist.

This led to the development of HP Digital Passport, a CES 2026 Innovation Award Honoree, viewable now on all new HP PCs starting with our 2025 introductions and expanding across all 2026 platforms. Digital Passport gives customers one place to access the essentials: from getting started, discovering unique product features, understanding their device’s sustainability story, and finding support options as their needs evolve. This new digital experience helps customers  learn their devices and engage with HP throughout its entire lifecycle, turning every product into a living, evolving connection between people, performance, and design.

One Scan to Unlock Your PC Experience

Each new HP PC launching in 2025 now includes a unique, serialized QR code printed directly on the bottom of the device. One quick scan from a mobile phone connects customers directly to a personalized digital hub personalized to that individual device.

A single scan of the serialized QR code on each new HP PC connects customers to their personalized Digital Passport experience.

The digital hub is continuously updated throughout the PC’s lifecycle, giving customers quick access to the information they need at every stage of PC ownership. Whether they’re setting up their devices for the first time, learning about new features, exploring sustainability details, finding compatible accessories, repairing components, or planning how to recycle at end-of-life, HP Digital Passport brings it all together in one simple, mobile-first experience.

The Impact: Smarter Engagement, Measurable Savings

With HP Digital Passport, users get a more engaging, efficient, and sustainable ecosystem that delivers:

  • Empowered Ownership: Customers can easily discover new features and capabilities throughout their ownership journey, leading to better use of their devices and higher satisfaction rates. In early pilots, more than 80% of PC shoppers1 said they would scan a QR code to learn more about their product, and pilot pages saw engagement rates up to five times higher than traditional web content.
  • Sustainability Made Visible: By replacing printed manuals and inserts with digital experiences, we’re reducing material use at scale and lowering our carbon footprint. Digital Passport also helps customers understand the recycled and renewable materials used in their devices, deepening their awareness of their environmental impact and supporting more informed, responsible ownership.
  • Greater Operational Efficiency for Businesses: The serialized QR code also unlocks new value for commercial customers. It enables easier asset identification and tracking, helping IT teams improve real-time visibility, streamline workflows, and optimize device utilization across large fleets. And the system meets TCO Certified Generation 10 standards, so organizations can feel confident that their devices meet rigorous criteria for sustainability and social responsibility.

Too Much Waste, Too Little Connection

A new PC often ships with unnecessary waste. Most devices arrive with required printed materials – documentation mandated by regional regulatory authorities – yet these are often ignored or discarded by customers because they provide little practical value in everyday use. Warranty booklets filled with dense legal language, printed in multiple languages and tiny type, are rarely read. And across millions of units shipped each year, those pages add up: based on 2025 shipment details, HP PCs generate approximately 5.3 million pounds of printed paper annually. This not only creates a negative environmental impact but also means that the information customers do need, like how to get started or discover new features, isn’t delivered to people in the right way or at the right moment.

We also know that customers care deeply about sustainability yet rarely have visibility into the story behind their own purchases: what it’s made of, how it can be reused, or how to give it a second life.

As we expand Digital Passport across more of our portfolio, we also see an opportunity to reshape how product information is delivered globally. Over time, our goal is to work with regulators to shift from paper-based documentation to digital formats that are clearer for customers and better for the planet, creating a more modern, efficient, and sustainable standard for the entire industry.

We’re excited to see how our customers use this new capability, which will be available on all HP PC’s launching at CES 2026 this week.
