Behind Every Genuine HP Printer Cartridge Is a Promise We Protect
Joe Pacula, SVP and Division President, Print Supplies Business Worldwide
September 3, 2025
At HP, we don’t just build technology—we build trust. Our print technology is thoughtfully engineered to make printing easier, smarter, and more flexible, empowering organizations to work more efficiently and making home printing effortless. Every ink cartridge, toner formulation, and print head we design reflects decades of innovation and a relentless commitment to quality. That’s why we take the protection of our intellectual property (IP) seriously. Because when we protect our IP, we’re protecting HP’s brand integrity and the customers who rely on it.
The Essence of IP Protection
IP protection is not just about safeguarding our creations. It's a multifaceted approach that helps build and reinforce customer trust while promoting healthy competition and securing the future of our business. When customers choose HP, they are choosing quality, reliability, security, sustainability, and the peace of mind that comes from using genuine products. Counterfeit products fall short of HP’s rigorous quality and performance measures, putting customers at risk of inconsistent or subpar experiences. Through IP protection, we aim to preserve the authentic HP experience our customers know and expect.
Just as importantly, IP protection promotes fair and healthy competition. It ensures that all players in the market compete on the strength of their own ideas and technologies. By upholding our IP rights, we foster an environment where innovation is rewarded—and customers benefit from high-performing, trustworthy solutions.
At the same time, protecting our investments in research and development allows us to maintain our competitive edge and fuel future innovation. It's our shield against unauthorized imitation, ensuring that our hard-earned innovations remain ours.
Real-World Action to Protect Quality and Trust
Our commitment to protecting customers is backed by action. In recent months, HP has resolved multiple cases worldwide involving unauthorized use of our patented cartridge technologies.
In Chile, Pacific Color marketed imitation cartridges — including HP 122XL, HP 662XL, HP 664XL, and HP 667XL — which were the subject of patent enforcement actions by HP involving patent CL 53745. These actions concluded with a settlement that included the withdrawal of the cartridges from the market and a financial compensation to HP.
ZhuHai CaiLuo Technology in Germany also acknowledged infringement of patents EP 3530470 and EP 3688602 and separately lost the lawsuit for infringing patent EP 2335120 with HP 912XL and HP 963 imitation cartridges. The first instance decision includes an order to cease sales and finds that ZhuHai CaiLuo Technology is obliged to pay financial compensation to HP.
Promo Rigenera in Italy acknowledged it had unknowingly purchased HP 301XL and HP 302XL imitation cartridges that infringed on patents EP 1737669 and EP 2089230 and agreed to cease all sales directly or indirectly and pay financial compensation to HP.
HP and Lama France reached a settlement following the first UPC lawsuit concerning patent infringement of printing supplies, based on HP patents EP 1737669 and EP 2089230.
In Germany, HP reached a settlement with Andreas Rentmeister ("Toner Office") regarding the sale of 924 and 937 cartridge models (including 937e, 924e, 924/924XL, and 937/937X), in connection with patents EP 286630, EP 230469, and EP 385965. Toner Office must provide details of its sales and pay an undisclosed amount of money to HP.
Also in Germany, HP obtained a partial acknowledgement judgment against Seine Holland B.V. and G&G GmbH. The two defendants acknowledged infringement of patents EP3552602 with 912 and 963 cloned chips as well as patent EP 3530470 with 963 parallel imports (compatible cartridge based on original HP cartridges meant for other regions). The remaining part of the dispute is still pending with the Regional Court of Munich I.
Addressing Infringement in the Digital Marketplace
In parallel, HP has taken proactive steps to address a broader range of IP infringements online. Online marketplaces today are littered with listings that appear to offer variety but often don’t. Many of these listings may look different but are, in fact, identical products sold under different brand names, frequently sourced from the same manufacturer. This creates a misleading illusion of choice, making it harder for consumers to make informed decisions.
To combat this, HP works closely with leading online marketplaces to remove improper listings that mislead customers or violate HP’s trademarks, copyrights, or patents. This includes counterfeit products that illegally carry our trademarks, as well as lookalike items that may confuse customers into believing they are genuine HP products.
In the first half of 2025 alone, HP collaborated with platforms such as Amazon, eBay, and Facebook to remove approximately 120,000 lookalike listings globally. Earlier this year, HP also requested the removal of more than 3,000 infringing ink and toner listings from Amazon—products tied to nearly 200 different cartridge brands but originating from only a few manufacturers.
Together, these enforcement efforts—both legal and digital—reflect our unified goal: to protect customers and the HP brand from all forms of infringement, ensuring a trusted and authentic experience across every channel.
Proactive Protection Through Education, Audits, and Enforcement
In addition to online monitoring and enforcement, HP’s Anti-Counterfeit (ACF) program plays a critical role in protecting customers and partners. We actively educate our partners and end-customers on how to identify and avoid counterfeit products, helping them make informed purchasing decisions. We also offer free product audits to provide reassurance that commercial customers have received Original HP supplies. Furthermore, we collaborate with local law enforcement agencies around the world to take action against those involved in the manufacture, distribution, or sale of counterfeit goods. Over the last three years, we have seized more than 8 million counterfeit items through coordinated global efforts. Together, these actions reinforce our commitment to quality, transparency, and customer trust.
IP Protection Matters More Than Ever
IP protection at HP isn’t just about business; it’s about trust. It's about ensuring that our customers get the best-in-class printing experience they expect from us. Every action we take to defend our intellectual property is a step toward preserving the quality, reliability, and innovation that define the HP brand.
HP will continue to defend and protect our IP, reinforcing our commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction.
