To recycle an old computer in Thailand, first back up your files and wipe your data with Windows 11’s “Reset this PC” tool, with the Clean data setting turned on. If the computer still works, donate it. If it doesn’t, take it to an e-waste collection point that accepts computers. Businesses with large volumes of HP equipment can use our free HP hardware recycling service.
Why Old Computers Need Their Own Recycling Route
Laptops and desktops contain batteries, circuit boards and other components that need specialist handling. They shouldn’t go in your general household rubbish. Recycling your computer through the right channel also lets you control what happens to the personal data stored on it.
Step 1: Back Up Your Files
Before you wipe anything, copy the files you want to keep to an external drive or a cloud storage service. If your device uses BitLocker encryption, make sure you have your BitLocker recovery key. [1]
Step 2: Wipe Your Data With Reset This PC
Deleting files or emptying the Recycle Bin doesn’t remove your data from the drive. Use Windows 11’s built-in reset instead:
- Open Settings and go to System > Recovery.
- Under Recovery options, select Reset PC.
- Choose Remove everything.
- Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall.
- Turn on Clean data. This cleans the drive so your files are much harder to recover. It takes longer, but Microsoft recommends it if you’re donating, recycling or selling your PC.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and let the reset finish. The screen may stay black for a while, so don’t restart the computer manually.
Microsoft notes that this tool isn’t designed to meet government or industry data-erasure standards. [1] If your computer held sensitive business data, use a certified data-erasure service.
Before you hand it over
- Sign out of your Microsoft account, email and browsers
- Remove the device from your Microsoft account’s device list
- Take out any USB drives, memory cards or discs
- Clear any stored data on old printers, such as saved scan or fax files
Step 3: Decide Whether to Donate or Recycle
If the computer still works, it may be worth more to someone else than to a recycler. Schools, community groups and charities often welcome working laptops and desktops. If it no longer works or is too old to be useful, recycle it.
Step 4: Choose Where to Recycle It
Use an e-waste collection point
Several organisations in Thailand run e-waste collection points, but many accept only small items such as phones, chargers and power banks. Before you go, check with the collection point or your local district office that they accept computers and laptops.
Ask your retailer
If you’re buying a new computer, ask the retailer whether it will take your old one back for recycling.
