Connect your wireless printer

Connecting your wireless printer to a wireless network!

Go through this short demo and you'll be on your way to wireless printing. WHY IT'S USEFUL

Having a wireless printer helps decrease cable clutter, frees you from your desk to print from a notebook anywhere in your home, and allows the whole family to share a single printer.

BEFORE YOU START

Make sure your wireless access point (or router) is up and running – you'll be using it to connect your printer to your wireless network.

Jot down your network name and password before you get started.

(You'll be using a wireless router, such as this Linksys model, to connect your printer to your wireless network) You chose your network name and password – also referred to as your wireless encryption protocol (WEP) or WiFi protected access (WPA) key – when you first set up your wireless network.

HOW TO CONNECT:

YOUR PRINTER

First, press Setup on your printer's control panel.
Then press Network Setup.
Next, choose Wireless Setup Wizard. Select your network name from the list that appears.
You may be asked to enter your WPA Key (network password) using your printer's keypad.
Make sure to type the password accurately – including capital letters and symbols.
To select a specific letter, case, or number on the keypad, repeatedly press the key until your desired character appears.

HOW TO CONNECT:

YOUR COMPUTER

After you've connected your printer to your wireless network you'll need to install up-to-date printer driver software on the computer/computers you want to use to print wirelessly.
Printer driver software will be included with your printer, but you can also find it at HP.com, Support and Drivers website.
After you download the software, a pop-up box with your first set of options will appear.
Choose Install Network/Wireless Device. From there simply follow the HP install Wizard prompts.
Please note that software drivers for wireless printers may take up to 30 minutes to completely install.
If you are connecting your wireless printer to a desktop PC rather than a notebook, don't plug in the USB cable until the setup software program prompts you to.
When the installation is complete, perform a test print to make sure that your computer and printer are successfully connected.
Now, enjoy the freedom of wireless printing.

Scanning documents with OCR

The most important scanning feature you never knew you needed. Discover how optical character recognition (OCR) software turns paper documents into editable digital files, simplifies data entry, searches, and much more.

What is OCR?

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to make a change to an important document, but you didn't have the digital file? Having a scanner with OCR is the perfect solution.

Optical character recognition (OCR) is a software application that works with your scanner to convert printed documents (books, papers, faxes, etc.) into editable, searchable files on your computer.

Readiris Pro is the OCR software application that comes with HP Document Management scanners and select Photo scanners and All-in-Ones.

Benefits of OCR

Save time: Eliminate the need to retype printed material into your computer. (If you lose a digital file, such as an important proposal, avoid retyping and simply scan the paper original or most recent draft.)
Make searching easy: Scanning with OCR software allows you to search for a scanned document using keywords or phrases. (Locate a specific invoice or receipt in no time at all!)
Save space: Digitize the contents of your filing cabinet, and move the originals to storage. (Useful if you're moving to a smaller space or want to get rid of office clutter.)

Scanning with OCR

After installing the Readiris Pro OCR software, click the Readiris icon on your desktop and follow the prompts until the application's welcome window appears.

Load your document onto the scanner flatbed or into the automatic document feeder (ADF).

Select Scan in the Readiris window, under Scanning options.

Saving Scans

After your document has been scanned, it will appear in the Readiris home window, with highlighted boxes.

At this point you can perform adjustments to your document – including straightening the page or reorganizing specific section – before saving.

Select the Recognize + Save option to save your document o applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, or Internet Explorer, where you can work with you scans as though you had typed them in by hand!

Create photo album pages

Print album pages with your HP Photosmart Printer

Before you start

A photo album is a delightful and creative way to showcase your snapshots and transform them into a beautiful story worth telling. And your HP Photosmart printer makes it easy to print your own album pages at home.

Your HP Photosmart printer may feature well-designed, professional looking album pages for a variety of occasions. HP Photosmart compact printers even include album templates with themes such as seasons and special events.

Choose the photographs you would like to use – the real winners – and group them in the order that best tells "the story". Perhaps it's preparing to board the plane for your big vacation, the five-hour flight, hitting the beach, or your last sunset before heading home. Be sure to do all of your editing before entering Album mode and to load your printer with the right paper.

Next, connect your computer to your printer or load your pictures on to a memory card and then insert the card into the printer. To create an album using your printer, select View & Print, and then select the photo you want to appear first in your album.

Create an album Select Create, and then select Albums. Use the onscreen arrows to navigate to this option if it's not visible.

Some printers, such as HP Photosmart A646 Compact Photo Printer, contain a variety of different themes. If your printer has this option, select the Album Category that best captures the theme of your photos: Seasons, Kids, Daily Life, or Special Events. Next, select your specific Album design.

After deciding whether or not you want a cover page, follow the prompt to Select Photos. Next, select how many Album Pages you would like. Lastly, select Done when you are ready to preview your album.

The album open with your photos placed on pages, with the first selection appearing on the cover. Use the onscreen arrows to flip through the pages of your book.

Select the Shuffle button to move photos among the template positions on the page.

Print your album

Now Print your album...and you're done! Albums cannot be saved, so be sure to print as many copies as you need before removing the memory card or turning off the printer.

You can also insert your album pages into a photo book for a classy, timeless presentation.

In order to scan negatives and slides, you'll need an HP Photo Scanner or All-in-One printer with a transparent materials adapter (TMA), which allows enough detail to be highlighted within the scans.

How to use it Voice over: Insert your negatives or slides into the holder. Arrange the holder print side down in the right front corner of the glass. Press Scan Menu and select an option.

Scanning your slides or negatives is easy once you have the right equipment. Simply insert your negatives or slides into the holder.

Scan at the right resolution –

Manage important papers with scanning

Why should I scan my paper documents?

A digital archive allows you to share, store, and retrieve valuable information, and eliminates annoying piles of paper and bulky storage cabinets. Scanning items such as birth certificates, tax returns, and real estate documents protects important records from being lost in the case of a fire, flood, or other unforeseen event.

Set up a system

Organize a system of clearly labeled folders on your PC's desktop for documents once they've been scanned. You'll be able to locate information or records without having to thumb though stacks of paper of folders. Even if you don't have optical character recognition (OCR), the time it takes to find a file will be significantly reduced.

Organize your documents

Before you begin scanning, gather your paper documents or files and organize any loose documents into relevant piles. Next, set aside smaller or odd-sized items that cannot be put thorough your scanner's automatic document feed (ADF). Finally, remove staples and paper clips, and smooth out any folds or creases to avoid paper jams.

Improve pictures with cropping

Cropping is probably the easiest way to improve all of your photos. And you can do it right in your HP printer. Learn these simple cropping tips for a lifetime of better photos.

This demo will show you how to bring a photo to life with a simple cropping technique you can use right in your printer—no PC required!

Before you start

Cropping a photo is an easy way to improve nearly every photograph you take. The goal of cropping is to fill the frame with your subject and eliminate background distractions to produce a much stronger picture. It can be done in your camera, with photo-editing software—or right in your HP Photosmart printer.

There is no fixed and fast rule for cropping, as every picture has its own unique story to tell. How you crop an image tells the viewer what to focus on. Only you can decide what that story is and the best way to draw that subject out.

Cropping tips

An artful crop can make your subject the clear center of attention. Simply decide what the focal point of your picture is, and crop in as close as you can with just a few simple touches using the touchscreen on your HP Photosmart printer or All-in-One.

While you're cropping, aim to eliminate any distracting visual elements that can detract from your main subject. Typical distractions include background clutter—for example, people who are not your subject or objects that appear to be sprouting from people's heads such as light poles or branches.

You also don't want to crop in so close that the viewer doesn't know what they are looking at! Be careful of cropping off a subject's chin or ear. An image needs a bit of space around the subject to allow for some eye movement. You can also crop a photo to bring out the natural frames in your image, making for a dramatic visual story.

You can only crop so much. Because your photo was taken with a certain amount of pixels, at a certain resolution, if you zoom in too closely it can make your cropped image look fuzzy and pixelated. How closely you can crop depends on the size of your original image file.

Cropping a photo with your HP All-in-One

Most HP Photosmart printers and All-in-Ones (such as the HP Photosmart C8180 All-in-One seen here) have a touchscreen that features easy-to-use cropping functionality. You can zoom in or out on a specific area of a photo. When you print the photo, it will be cropped so only the area shown on the display prints.

Load your photos onto your printer by inserting a memory card into the appropriate slot on the HP All-in-One, connecting a storage device to the front USB port, or inserting a CD/DVD (label side up) into the drive. The Photosmart Express menu appears, with the most recent photo shown on the display.

Touch View. The View Photos screen appears. Touch or scroll through the thumbnails of your photos. When the thumbnail of the photo you want to edit appears, touch it. When the selected photo appears by itself on the display, touch the image or touch Options. Select the Shuffle button to move photos among the template positions on the page.

Touch Edit. Touch Crop. Touch the zoom in or zoom out magnifying glass icons on the screen to zoom closer to or farther away from the subject of the photo. An outline appears on the photo to show you an approximate view of the area that will print. Use the arrow buttons to pan around the photo and select a specific area to print. Touch Crop to apply your changes

To preview your cropped photo, touch the Back icon until you return to the Options menu, then touch Print Preview. To print, touch the Back icon until you return to the View Photos screen. Then, touch Print.
