How to Connect Your Printer to WiFi

Wireless printers are a convenient option that simplifies home office and business layouts, allowing multiple devices to print from the same machine without needing a physical connection.
HP offers a range of excellent wireless printers to match any use case you can think of, from high volume use in professional settings to arts and crafts enthusiasts looking to make something special.
In order to set it up for wireless use, you must learn how to connect an HP printer to WiFi. Thankfully, this is a simple task most of the time, and we’ll take you through the steps needed to get printing wirelessly.
While usually, HP printers connect to WiFi seamlessly and reliably, we understand issues can occur. So, if you’re having problems connecting an HP printer to WiFi, we’ll also take you through some common causes and how to fix them.

Connecting an HP printer to WiFi

Connecting your particular HP printer to WiFi depends on its model. HP support has a search page where you can enter your model and find helpful information related to setting up your specific printer and connecting it to WiFi.
The simplest way to connect a modern HP printer to WiFi is using the HP Smart app. To do this, you will need:
  • A Windows 10 Computer connected to the same wireless network you want to connect your printer to
  • A Wireless HP printer powered on and in WiFi setup mode
  • The wireless network password or key

1. Download and install HP Smart App

The HP Smart app allows you to set up and connect an HP printer to WiFi as well as share and print from your computer or mobile device. You can find the relevant links to download and install HP Smart App here. If this is your first time using the app, you will have to create or sign in to an HP account.

2. Ensure your printer is in WiFi setup mode

The first time you turn on your HP printer, it will automatically go into WiFi setup mode. This will last for two hours. If it has been longer than two hours or you want to set up a new WiFi connection, you can re-enter the setup mode using one of the following options:
  • Most printers with a touch screen: From either the “Wireless” or “Setup” menu, press “Network setup” or “Settings”, then select “Restore Network Settings.”
  • Most inkjet printers without a touch screen: Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons until the Power button flashes. After this, the Wireless light should flash.
  • Most laser printers without a touch screen or control panel menu: Press and hold the Wireless button until the Attention and Power lights begin to flash, or press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons until the Wireless light starts flashing. Be aware that during this process, the printer may restart.
  • Most laser printers without a touch screen: Press and hold the Wireless button until the Attention light flashes, then wait for the Wireless light to flash.
  • For the following models: Envy 6000, 6000e, 6400e, ENVY Pro 6400, DeskJet Plus IA 6000, 6400, and Tango printers: Press and hold the Wireless button found on the back of the printer for five seconds until the Status light flashes; this will be either blue or purple depending on the model.

3. Connect to WiFi

Open HP Smart and select “Set Up a New Printer.” The app will scan nearby for any printers in WiFi setup mode, and it should quickly find your machine.
Once found, click “Set Up” on your printer (it will show the corresponding model). HP Smart will confirm that your printer is ready to go; click on “Continue.” You will then be asked to enter the WiFi password for the network your computer is currently connected to. Confirm the password and click “Continue.”
While your printer connects to the network, you must confirm your proximity to the machine for security reasons. You will receive a prompt telling you to touch the checkmark on your printer display; if your printer does not have a touch screen, press the Information button on the printer. HP Smart will confirm when the printer is connected to the wireless network.

Potential WiFi printer problems

If you are having trouble connecting an HP printer to WiFi, there are several simple fixes you can try:
  • To prevent weak or intermittent WiFi signal, position your printer and computer closer to the WiFi router or boost your WiFi signal
  • Check all network settings are correct and the password hasn’t been updated.
  • Power cycle (turn off and on again) all the devices involved: printer, computer, and WiFi router, and restart the process described above.
  • Check you have the correct software and drivers for your printer.
