LaserJet font solutions - signature & logo faqs

To assist you with your new HP font product, the following is a brief compilation of the most commonly asked questions (and answers) from our customers.
  1. What is an Escape Sequence? How is it implemented?

An escape sequence is a string of printer commands that tells your LaserJet printer to print the signature or logo from your font product. Exactly how the escape character or string is represented will vary with the application and/or operating system.

  2. How do I place the signature/logo in the location I choose on the page?

Your printer has a cursor just as a PC does. The printer cursor can be placed anywhere on the page, at any time, with the correct command. This action is known as Cursor Control. Once the printer's cursor is placed where it is needed, you can use the escape sequence to address the signature or logo.

  3. How do I show that my signature/logo/MICR font will print okay?

A test file should be created which will be copied to the printer so a sample print of the PCL bitmapped font will be generated. A couple of ways to accomplish this is a DOS edit file or a UNIX VI editor file. For the character mapping, reference the paperwork sent with your product. You will need to print the character, which contains the signature, or logo as assigned when developed.

  4. How do I get the signature/logo to print once I have installed the PCM file through my Windows PCL 5e printer driver?

The font will show in the Windows font list so it is then available for selection. The custom point size should also be selected in the pull down list of point sizes. The special character or characters should be entered in at the point in the document where you need the signature/logo to print.

  5. Why is the text immediately following the signature not printing properly? Why is the signature printing randomly on the next page?

The signature font has not been "turned off". Another font escape sequence needs to be sent to have the printer print from an internal printer font such as Courier. The PCL Typeface List will be helpful in creating a standard internal font's escape sequence. It is important to choose a Symbol Set since it is the first thing the printer looks to in choosing from the fonts available. A common Symbol Set to choose would be 0U for ASCII or 8U for Roman 8.

If you have a question as to whether or not the software application you are using is capable of sending a printer command, please contact your software vendor directly.
