HP and Palo Alto Team Up on One of the Largest Solar Array Projects in Palo Alto
September 12, 2019
At HP, we aspire to create a world without waste. From our supply chain, to our operations, to our technology and service offerings, we are transforming our entire business for a circular, low-carbon economy.
As a company, we recently announced our new commitment to use 100% renewable electricity in our global operations by 2035 and to achieve a 60% carbon emissions reduction by 2025. As part of this effort, on September 10th, HP and the City of Palo Alto celebrated the completion of the newest solar array on HP’s Palo Alto campus and hosted mayor Eric Filseth and representatives from SunPower.
“Eighty years ago, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard cleared out a small California garage to launch a company that not only creates value for its customers and shareholders, but also for society,” said Kim Rivera, President of Strategy and Business Management and Chief Legal Officer. “Today, our actions and investments in sustainability and renewable energy not only strengthen our business – but also the communities where our employees live and work.”
As part of Palo Alto’s CLEAN (Clean Local Energy Accessible Now) program, HP has built the largest commercial project which contributes renewable energy to the city’s electricity grid: 1.4 megawatts of solar electricity, offsetting the equivalent of over 1.9 million pounds of coal yearly. The installation also provides shade for more than 90 parking spaces near Building 5, including a number of accessible parking spaces.

“In addition to the carports, the project combines solar panels on our rooftop to generate enough electricity to power 263 homes for one year,” said Cynthia Rock, HP’s Head of Global Real Estate. “We can already see the value of the shaded parking, our employees love to park under these carports, but we are also reducing the heat island effect which lowers the ambient temperature overall. This is just one example of the many sustainability projects HP is carrying out around the world.”
