Fuel cells

The fuel cell market is quickly stratifying into several promising segments.   They range from low-wattage mobile applications through kilowatt stationary power plants for backup power or remote (off-the-grid) installations.  Delivery of a full fuel cell solution requires a broad range of technological capabilities spanning deep material science through complex system controls.

This portfolio includes technologies in the following areas:

  • Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) membranes
  • Controlled hydrogen generation and fuel management
  • Stack design and manufacturing methods
  • Fuel reformation, storage and metering
  • System and load management
  • User interfaces

Nanotechnology-based solar cells

HP Labs has developed a promising technology for generating energy from the sun using nanotechnology. HP scientists created small-scale devices that use the quantum properties of nanowires to produce electricity more efficiently than many competing technologies. These cells can be produced on a variety of materials, including flexible substrates, and can be made at a low cost.
