Assistive technology featured on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition September 17 show

HP and several of our assistive technology vendors had a hand in developing a new home for a family in which four members are blind or going blind due to a hereditary disease. In addition, one son is deaf as the result of a pre-birth case of German measles. This home was recently featured on the ABC television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Among the AT companies who contributed solutions were: Ai Squared, Freedom Scientific, HumanWare, Nuance Communications and PPR Direct. View a complete list of companies and products used in the house.

Accessibility case studies on HP Web site

We love to brag about how solutions from HP and our assistive technology vendors help our customers. We've worked with a number of our AT partners to document these successes in customer case studies, and we want to feature more of these types of stories.

Do you have a customer story you want to tell? We'll work with you to interview the customer and write the story, and we'll publish the article on the HP Accessibility Web site. You also can feature the story on your Web site and in your marketing campaigns. Send your case study ideas to us by completing the form located on this page.

Read the case studies already posted on the HP Accessibility Web site. Among the stories are solutions from ViewPlus, One Write Company, Code Factory, Freedom Scientific, Keybowl and HumanWare. Your company could be next!

Getting more from DSPP

The HP Developer & Solution Partner Program (DSPP) offers a wide range of benefits and services for companies that develop solutions based on HP platforms. To help you get more from your membership in DSPP, each issue we'll highlight a different aspect or benefit of the program. Because we have so many AT partners who develop solutions for the HP iPAQ Pocket PC platform, this issue we are featuring the iPAQ Developer Program.

The iPAQ Developer Program provides you with the tools, information, resources, and support you need to make your iPAQ-based applications and solutions a reality. What's more, the program has a variety of opportunities to promote your product, from partner success stories to logo certification.

There are three types of membership for this program: associate level, developer level and premier level. The differences among them are the types of benefits you receive.

The associate level is free to join and offers access to web-based tools to help you develop and promote your product. The developer level is $199 to join and adds the benefits of developer tools such as software development kits and access to an extensive online knowledge base. The premier membership is $399 to join and gives members access to valuable support, equipment and marketing programs.

Register online for the iPAQ Developer Program.

Microsoft and Empower Technologies make it easier to shop for assistive technology online

In early October, Empower Technologies announced the launch of a new Assistive Technologies (AT) comparison shopping experience via a number of Microsoft Web sites, including MSN Shopping and Windows Live Shopping.

The availability of this service addresses the long-standing absence of a single, comprehensive resource where shoppers can comparison shop for and purchase AT products, which benefit not only people with disabilities, but also the growing aging population.

The arrival of this new shopping service coincides with a growing audience for AT products, such as those who have physical or cognitive difficulties, and the rapidly growing baby-boomer population who may need AT products as they grow older and live longer.

The EU: fertile ground for AT sales

Many U.S.-based AT vendors focus their sales efforts in their home country. Federal and state mandates for agencies and educational institutions to support accessibility for people with disabilities can be a boon to sales. However, the European Union is also fertile ground for sales of assistive technologies. Most EU members also are under pressure to support eAccessibility mandates. Each country, however, might have its own law regarding the purchase of accessible information and communication technology (ICT).

The harmonization of worldwide accessibility standards

In the last issue of this newsletter, we told you about the Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC1) of the International Organization of Standards (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) having a Special Working Group on Accessibility (SWG-A). The SWG-A is working to accelerate the development of worldwide standards for accessible hardware, software, communications services, and web access. The SWG-A goal is to federate the numerous standardization activities aimed at improving the accessibility of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) products and services.

To get a better perspective on the working group's efforts and how it all might impact your business, read "A Standard Set of Standards" by Michael Takemura, HP Accessibility Program Director.
