Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing rips! I recently purchased the HP Omen gaming laptop and have been using it to play Warzone 2.0. I am extremely happy with my purchase. The laptop has a powerful processor and graphics card, which allows it to handle the demanding game with 110-140 FPS. The screen is great, with vibrant colors and decent resolution. The keyboard is comfortable to type on and the touchpad is responsive. Overall, I am very satisfied with the performance of the HP Omen and would highly recommend it for anyone looking to play Warzone 2.0 or other demanding games.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very capable machine! This is a powerful and capable laptop. I was surprised to find it outperforming my desktop PC substantially, and my desktop isn't that old. The trade-off you make is battery life. This machine can drain its battery in about two hours, even when not doing much, and more quickly when running games. It's great as a portable workstation, but make sure you're near a power outlet if you're planning to work or play on the move. Decent size screen/resolution. I do a lot of programming work, so the general rule is the more screen real estate, the better. Often I find laptops difficult to work on because the screen just feels to restrictive. The screen on the Omen 16, measures 16 inches diagonal (unsurprisingly) with a native resolution of 1920x1080, and I find really comfortable to use. It's bright, great contrast, with a wide viewing angle. There is a single HDMI output and two USB-C ports providing DisplayPort output on the back of the machine, so connecting this machine up to a multi-monitor desktop setup is not a problem. Overall, the machine feels to be an ideal size - not too bulky or heavy, but not too cramped and small, either. The machine has a large air intake across the bottom, and expels warm air to the rear. The fans are pretty quiet and overall it does a good job of keeping the machine cool. Even under heavy load, it doesn't get too loud. The keyboard is ok. It's a laptop keyboard, which generally aren't anything to write home about, but it's comfortable to use and nothing seems to be out of place. It doesn't have a numeric pad, which might be a problem for some, but isn't a big issue for me, as it gives more space for the rest of the keys. It has configurable RGB lighting for the keyboard, but the keys are divided into a few zones that can be colored independently, rather than having custom assignments per key. The touchpad is large and responsive, but there's a total of three USB type A ports on the side of the machine (1 left, two right), if you'd prefer a mouse. No optical drive in this machine, but honestly, it's a long time since I've used a cd or dvd. There is an SD memory card slot on the side, which I wasn't expecting, but is nice to have. I finally got around to pulling the vacation photos off of my DSLR camera. I was able to browse through the images on the card very quickly, and the color reproduction looked great to me. The laptop comes with a 500GB NVMe SSD installed, which feels a little small by today's standards. It'll do for now, but is probably the first component that I'll upgrade - it's expandable to 2TB. There is 16GB of memory, expandable to 32GB. Removing the bottom of the laptop to access these isn't too difficult - 8 small phillips head screws and gentle persuasion with a plastic spudger pops the back off easily. While in there, I noticed there appears to be a second, empty NVMe slot, and the battery along the bottom edge appears to be relatively easy to replace when it reaches the end of its life. At least, it's accessible and looks to be held in by screws rather than glue. I was pleased to see a LAN socket on this machine, which is useful to have. The wifi works really well, though. I'm getting great reception all around the house. This machine is very quick. I tried building the game project I've been working on, that takes about 35 minutes on my desktop PC, just to see if it got anywhere close. I was truly surprised when the build finished in 15 minutes. Performance playing games is great, too. I'm getting steady smooth framerates on everything I've thrown at it so far. Even VR games rendering over wifi to the headset work really well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic for medium-to-heavy gaming on the go After some testing on games ranging on medium (Overwatch, Diablo 2, GTA5, World of Warcraft [Retail]) to semi-heavy usage (Call of Duty, New World, Cyberpunk 2077) the performance was smooth and uninterrupted. Baseline RAM/storage was somewhat limited but didn't feel too restricting to play extensively (at least if you're comfortable with having only a handful of games installed on the 512gb ssd). Size of the laptop is lean and not overly flashy (which I prefer) and the keyboard has a quiet click surface with a very responsive trackpad. Ports all work as expected, was able to connect the laptop to a 49" ultrawide monitor via DisplayPort with no interruptions and a clean experience. Would recommend for a gaming solution on the go without going too heavy on dependency for a high-quality gaming experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Laptop... Exceeds Expectations I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed with this gaming laptop. It is surprisingly slim for a laptop that has a dedicated graphics card. It's not exactly light, but it is slim. Boot speeds are lightening fast and the laptop handles gaming at speeds over 60 fps without any issue. The screen is silky smooth at 144hz which really showcases the performance of the display. I am impressed by the airflow as the computer handles the heat that can be an issue with other gaming laptops that I have used. I recommend this computer to anyone looking for a solid gaming laptop at an affordable price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a Great Versatile Machine Starting off, the case is very low key and simple…in a good way, it’s not obnoxious like other gaming laptops I have seen. Just a flat black case with some gloss black elements here and there. Even though I typically use headphones, on the off chance I am not, the Bang & Olufsen speakers sound amazing. The keyboard is nice and solid, but the back lighting could be a bit brighter. The display is incredibly fast for a computer at this price and has no issues keeping up with the games I am currently playing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Buy! I am amazed. This gaming laptop has exceeded my expectations. This laptop has so many great features. It’s very sleek and not bulky or super heavy. It’s has a wonderful large screen that is perfect for gaming and watching movies. The processing is so fast and you can change settings for your needs. Other great things are the backlit keyboard and the clear webcam.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a truly beautiful computer I know this is a gaming laptop, but I think this is such a nice laptop that anyone would notice the quality of materials, sound, and picture. I am not sure how you’d ever go from this for games to something company issued for your day job! Starting with the packaging: beautiful! It’s very well packaged and I’d have no concerns about it being damaged in shipping. Great if you ever needed to send it somewhere. The keys - very responsive and feel great. You won’t get fatigue from using this keyboard for many hours. The picture is AMAZING. I was not expecting it to be so clear. Truly as good as any high end tv. Much nicer than any laptop I’ve ever used. The sound! Bang and Olufsen. Enough said, right? Crystal clear, no weird echoing. I listen to music and it’s better than a lot of standalone speakers. Way better than I expected from a laptop. This exceeds all the expectations I have for a laptop. It is truly gorgeous all around. Buy it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from She's a beast! So far I've been really pleased with this setup. For the specs and screen size it's not crazy heavy which is nice. The backlight keys are a big hit w/ my kids. The display is crisp and the processor has plenty of juice for my use. I will say that I def have to get used to the slightly offset keyboard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing I’ve had HP laptops before but this one is a monster (in a good way). It’s very sturdy but also lightweight which is important when you have kids! After a few updates this thing took off and was ready to go! The screen resolution is great (sadly not a touchscreen), the processor moves super fast and for gaming there is NO lag! This laptop is absolutely a winner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome and Stylish Gaming Laptop First off, this laptop has a very nice sleek black finish. Definitely look like a high quality laptop. Once you turn it on, you'll notice the rainbow colored keyboard and how fast it loads up. Looks very cool. The laptop is a 16in, larger than my regular 14in laptop. Definitely heavier than I expected, but it is a gaming laptop. Has multiple USB ports and an HDMI port. It also uses Bang & Olufsen speakers. It has a large touchpad which I'm not use to yet, but I mostly use a mouse. Spec wise, it comes with an AMD processor and 16gb of ram. Wish it had more ram though. It has an awesome graphics card, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050. Definitely great for gaming. Now for the test, I downloaded a few games from my Steam collection and Blizzard. I first tried World of Warcraft. It definitely ran very smooth and the graphics and color were vibrant and superb. I then tested on playing some Diablo 2 and it also ran very smooth. Details of all the action were very clear. I also played Call of Duty Warzone and it definitely played well, as good as my gaming PC. I also watched a couple movies and it was crystal clear. The speakers definitely worked well and sounded crisp. Definitely enjoyed using the full 16inch screen. Only thing is the display was maxed at 1920x1080. Maybe I was use to the higher resolution on my PC, but it worked well for the laptop. I would recommend this laptop to anyone who's looking for a high quality gaming laptop. Well built and runs smooth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from sleek machine! I'm initially impressed on how sleek this laptop is, especially as its aimed towards gaming. It's no macbook air, but for a gaming laptop, its remarkably sleek and doesn't look like a huge box with crazy edges, and extreme look. As for computing, so far, its passed all checkmarks for everything I've thrown at it. I expect to be able to game with this for at least 3-4 years, depending on my storage needs, but otherwise, its a very very capable machine and I'm glad I have it!
Date published: 2022-10-21
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing CPU and Graphics! The HP OMEN 16 (16-n0747nr) is an awesome gaming laptop! It sports an AMD Ryzen 5 6600H, which is a 6-core/12-thread 6nm Zen3+ processor designed for a 45w TDP. The processor is insanely fast: It plows through anything I can throw at it. It actually feels like overkill for my games and applications. For memory, my laptop came with 16 GB of LPDDR5 (2x8 GB). This works well for all my current needs, but I always like to have lots of extra RAM. I was pleased to see that the memory slots were relatively easy to access from the back panel and I could upgrade to 32 GB (2x16 GB) without much trouble (be sure to upgrade both sticks at the same time to maintain faster dual-channel memory speeds). That said, I've not run into anything yet that needs more than 16 GB, so it's really more of a question of how future-proof you want your system to be. My laptop included a 512 GB NVMe SSD. It's very roomy for my OS and apps and leaves plenty of space for my Steam library. Level load times and general application performance are great. I've not noticed any lag due to storage I/O. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 dedicated GPU delivers a consistent 60 FPS at 1080p with Max Detail on all of my AAA Steam titles: Assassin's Creed Origins, Far Cry 5, Rise of the Tomb Raider, etc. You name it: I have not found a game yet that stutters! The built-in APU graphics on the CPU are great as well. I set all applications but my games to use this APU, as it consumes much less power, reduces heat, and helps extend my battery life. You can actually do 1080p gaming on titles that are a few years old without skipping a beat! It's great to have this kind of flexibility. The 1080p IPS matte 144 Hz display is quite good. I never use higher resolutions than 1080p and appreciate that this display is a more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. The (huge!) 16.1" screen has pretty thin bezels and feels VERY roomy and immersive. I was pleased to see that HP included a webcam along the top bezel. I was very pleased to see that the panel had a wide color gamut with very good sRGB coverage. I've had previous gaming panels that made reds and blues appear washed out. This display is a nice upgrade! All that said, the huge display can be a bit wobbly when I'm typing quickly. It would have been nice to see tighter hinges to cut down on screen movement. The keyboard and touchpad are great! They're both very roomy and the keys have great travel. It's a joy to type on this keyboard! The keyboard is RGB backlit, which is a nice touch but I typically prefer a simple white backlight during regular use. The laptop is very thin given how much horsepower HP has managed to squeeze into it. That said, this thing weighs ~5 lbs. and can get to be heavy and hot when using on your lap for long periods. It can get quite warm using its default settings, so I changed my Windows power plan to favor battery life while unplugged. As a result, it stays much cooler while on my lap, while still delivering a great punch in games. Bottom Line: This laptop is a gaming beast! I've not been able to throw anything at it that really gives it pause! I get a solid 60 FPS at 1080p in all my games. I'm very happy that I've got a beast of CPU in the Ryzen 5 6600H. My friends are jealous!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hardware-wise, great laptop The Omen gaming laptop was incredibly easy to set up, especially if you already have a Microsoft account. The biggest Con for this laptop is really for Microsoft and how it pushes ads, sponsorships, and tracking at every step, requiring you to either accept your overlord or carefully read and pick and chose your settings. Even then you have to go into Edge and turn off ads and sponsorships. Once we did all of that, we were impressed with the speed and storage of the laptop, as well as its slick form factor. Be aware that while the machine comes with Microsoft 11, it does not include any Office programs unless you subscribe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful Machine - Amazing Graphics I bought this laptop to play first person shooters and strategy games and it performs at a top notch level. It can handle some of the highest setting in game and run smoothly without missing a beat. I was worried about overheating, but this machine handles hours of gaming with no issue. The design is sleek and the keys are smooth and responsive. Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PERFECT I thought I would get scammed while buying this cause it was too good to be true, but I was very wrong. This Laptop is perfect as long as you're not playing video games without the charger the battery last pretty long. I've just started school and have been using this laptop and it can run any adobe app my school throws at me. Even when I use this thing at home to play video games the performance is OUTSTANDING. I would definitely recommend this product to a friend!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Omen 16 ryzen/nvidia Overall solid laptop, good balance of power and mobility. I was surprised by how much I actually like the rear IO, and I appreciate how the computer tries smartly limit power usage. My only issues are the amount of bloatware that ships with the system, and that at one point the computer kept opening my games using integrated radeon graphics rather than the RTX 3060 despite being plugged into a power source. Without finding out why or an in-depth solution, you can tell the laptop to use only the 3060 via the Omen gaming hub, but that will cut into battery life.
Date published: 2022-12-27
Rated 4 out of 5 by from good laptop overall, could use some more power Solid gaming laptop, with a decent compromise of being lightweight and affordable for the speed. As with any laptop, it always seems like you want more power for the price and weight, but it does seem like this one could've used some more RAM to keep up with power-hungry games. The trackpad is fine, the keys are good, and the screen is solid.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid 1080p Gaming laptop My daughter loves this new HP laptop, she's able to enjoy her Fortnite gaming sessions and feels like a pro. This is not a high end laptop, but a decent choice for solid 1080p gaming at high FPS. We do wish that the screen was a bit brighter, but no complains overall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Great Desktop Replacement Forward: this review is intended for users of average and above-average technical needs, but not specifically gamers. Those of you wondering how well this handles Horizon: Zero Dawn should look elsewhere. Due to a combination of discounts and sales, I managed to get this for around $1,150. It's a deal that's hard to beat for that price, especially as a desktop replacement. I'll break the feature into three categories. The Good 1. The aforementioned internal specs. It has a great hard drive, CPU, and GPU. 2. More ports than NYC and LA combined. 3. Responsive keys and touchpad. 4. It's cool and smooth enough to comfortably keep on one's lap. The Mixed 1. The screen. It's bright, colorful, and wide. However, the spacious display feels somewhat squandered by the screen resolution. Even 1920x1200 would have been satisfactory. 2. The keyboard layout. (YMMV, so take a good look at the photos.) The good is the full-size arrow keys, the inclusion of a context-menu key, and the exclusion of the (utterly unhelpful) "help" key. The bad is the substandard-sized Enter and Backspace, and the placement of Power adjacent to Backspace. 3. The form factor. It's a heavy beast, and there's an inch-tall region below the display that should have been additional screen space. Also, the keyboard and touchpad are awkwardly off-center. On the other hand, it has a sturdy hinge and generally solid construction. The Bad 1. Windows 11. The OS requires a boatload of computational power, and it sabotages users' productivity with incessant ads, news headlines, and other distractions. Avoid it for as long as you can. It was bad enough that I taught myself how to install Linux Mint (which I recommend). 2. The battery. As many others have mentioned, it has a poor battery life even in new condition. Verdict: this is a good general-purpose laptop, but the battery life is an impairment to many potential users. I'm sure that artists, hardcore gamers, and other niche user communities could nitpick the hardware for one reason or another, but it easily fulfills the needs of the vast majority of users. It's ideal for those who need a large amount of computational power and don't highly value portability; hence my recommendation as a desktop replacement.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Responsive! This is a good looking Omen Gaming Laptop that is quick and easy to setup, walking you through the steps. Comes with McAffee anti virus trial which is helpful if you don’t have other virus software. The keyboard has a cool colorful backlight which can be switched on or off. The sound is good but being Bang & Olufsen, I didn’t expect it to have the lack of bass like it does. The clarity of the screen is excellent, the picture is sharp and crisp. The laptop is very responsive, fast and smooth, excellent for gaming, it also works well as an everyday laptop. Apart from the sound, I am very happy with it.

Is the ram soldered or is it upgradable?  I’m looking to upgrade the 16gb Ram to its max capability.

Asked by: Sabisfab
The RAM on this OMEN by HP Laptop 16-n0797nr is not soldered and can be upgraded. As the RAM is not easily accessible, HP recommends upgrades be performed by IT professionals or self-maintainers only.
