Fast facts

Find fast facts about HP's environment program.

HP has been a leader for decades in promoting environmental sustainability in our product development, operations and supply chain. Today, we are addressing environmental challenges with smart, practical solutions that help us and our customers conserve resources and minimize impact while saving money and increasing productivity. We are building on our progress by engaging customers, partners, suppliers and policymakers in advancing environmental standards and practices in the IT industry and beyond.

Design for Environment

HP's Design for Environment program, established in 1992, takes a life cycle approach to reducing the impact of HP products, improving their performance in areas such as energy efficiency, materials innovation and recyclability.

Energy Consumption Goal

HP's goal is to reduce the combined energy consumption of HP operations and products 25 percent below 2005 levels by 2010. We are reducing the impact of our operations by installing energy-efficient technologies that help cut associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, purchasing renewable energy, reducing waste and increasing recycling. Because of these efforts, in 2008 HP lowered its GHG emissions by 4 percent compared with 2007 in absolute terms, and 13 percent normalized to revenue.

Recycling History and Goals

Since the 1980s, we have been reducing the electronic waste stream by promoting more product reuse and recycling. Today, HP offers a range of product recovery services, including reuse and recycling programs in 53 countries or territories. In 2008, we recovered 340 million pounds (154,000 tonnes) of hardware, including 75 million pounds (34,000 tonnes) for reuse and remarketing, and more than 265 million pounds (120,000 tonnes) of electronics and supplies for recycling.

Products meeting Eco-label Standards

HP offers over a thousand products that meet key eco-label programs, such as ENERGY STAR, Canada Environmental Choice, Blue Angel (Germany), TCO (Sweden), and China CECP energy. In addition, more than 115 HP products now include an HP Eco Highlights label describing key environmental features and HP's environmental goals.

Supply Chain Social and Environmental Responsibility Program

Our commitment to environmental sustainability extends to our suppliers. Through our supply chain social and environmental program, we hold our suppliers accountable for meeting the same stringent environmental standards we apply to ourselves. In 2008, HP became the first major IT company to publish aggregated supply chain GHG emissions. We worked with first-tier suppliers representing more than 80 percent of our total product manufacturing spend to report their GHG emissions, which totaled 3.5 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent in 2007.
