Press Release:

U.S. Army Honors Compaq for Technology Support of Pentagon Rescue, Recovery Operations

The U.S. Army today honored Compaq Computer Corporation, now part of the new HP (NYSE: HPQ), for its support of the Pentagon's rescue and recovery operations following the September 11 attacks. Assistant Division Commander, Brigadier General David Van Kleeck of the 75th Division will present an award to former Compaq Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael Capellas (currently HP president) during a brief ceremony.

Compaq served the immediate and ongoing needs of the Army's Information Management Center and the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations & Plans (ODCSOPS), providing equipment, consultation and technical support to restore the Army's operations at the Pentagon.

The team worked around the clock to deliver, configure and install server and storage systems to restore the Army's email systems and repair existing storage systems. Within days, the Army's critical systems were restored and back online. By October, the Information Management Center replaced their entire server farm with Compaq servers.

U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Eric K. Shinseki and Secretary of the Army Thomas E. White expressed their gratitude in a letter presented to Capellas: "Thank you for the tremendous support Compaq provided to the Pentagon rescue and recovery operations. Those efforts reflect the Nation's commitment to the soldiers and public servants who lost their lives during the horrific attack on September 11, 2001."
