Press Release:

HP Launches FSAM Storage Efficiency Strategy

Groundbreaking Strategy Produces Up to Tenfold Increase in Storage Scale Within the Same "People-print"

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP) today launched HP Federated Storage Area Management (FSAM), the company's strategy for delivering solutions and technologies to manage unpredictable business storage demands. At the same time, HP announced its first solutions resulting from FSAM.

When fully implemented, FSAM is expected to enable organizations to use all of the storage resources in a given domain to manage the unpredictability of capacity demand, staffing availability and business continuance. This in turn will lead to up to a ten-fold increase(1) in storage scale within the same "people-print," the number of people required to manage a storage environment.

According to Gartner Group, storage area management "is the centralized management of resources and data across a storage domain, providing shared services to a group of servers and their applications."(2) HP extends this definition, defining FSAM as a more effectively administered management network of modular storage appliances that, when integrated with storage area management software, subsystems and services, creates a naturally scalable environment of federated storage resources. The HP solutions include HP Surestore hardware, HP OpenView software and HP integrated storage services.

FSAM is driven by the HP Network Storage Solutions Organization (NSSO) and incorporates technology ranging from large disk arrays to simple tape devices as well as storage area management software. FSAM storage solutions will help organizations easily adapt and scale their storage environments to meet the unpredictable demands of today's applications while increasing operational efficiency.

"Our solutions increase predictability in an unpredictable world, enabling customers to maximize the use of information," said Nora Denzel, vice president and general manager, HP Network Storage Solutions Organization. "As a result, our customers can focus on transforming their business and capitalizing on the advantages created by global networking."

The First FSAM Solutions

HP also is announcing three elements that support the FSAM strategy -- the HP Network Storage Appliance, HP Surestore Virtual Array 7100 and a family of virtual array enterprise software products, and HP OpenView Storage Area Manager.

The HP Network Storage Appliance is a pre-tested, configured Windows®-based storage network solution that installs quickly, works immediately and scales easily to meet the demands of unpredictable storage. It incorporates storage hardware, both backup and storage management software, services and support, and it enables enterprise customers to quickly and easily implement a storage network. The HP Network Storage Appliance is expected to begin shipping in Q201.

HP is working with Microsoft® Corp. to provide scalable, networked storage for Windows operating environments.

"HP's Network Storage Appliance is a great application of Windows' excellent reliability and scalability," said Rob Short, vice president of base O/S kernel organization, Microsoft Corp. "FSAM is focused on a core storage issue that affects customers' ability to control cost and improve business agility."

The HP Surestore Virtual Array 7100 is a second-generation array designed to increase efficiency. Featuring centralized and remote management, the HP Surestore Virtual Array 7100 offers software to simplify storage administration and lower total cost of ownership. The HP Surestore Virtual Array 7100 is a cost-effective solution for organizations with heterogeneous environments and is a crucial element of the FSAM strategy. The HP Surestore Virtual Array 7100 is expected to begin shipping in April.

The HP OpenView Storage Area Manager (SAM) is a complete suite of Windows-based storage management software. It combines HP OpenView Storage Node Manager, HP OpenView Storage Allocater (formerly LUN Manager), HP OpenView Storage Optimizer and HP OpenView Storage Builder into a powerful management platform that increases the efficiency and manageability of a storage network. The HP OpenView SAM suite is integrated into the HP Network Storage Appliance. The HP OpenView SAM is expected to begin shipping in April.
