Press Release:

HP Bolsters High-end Server Lineup with Powerful, New NonStop Servers

Delivers Enhanced Performance and Open Functionality to Customers, Attracts Leading Partners

HP (NYSE: HPQ) today unveiled new HP NonStop servers that deliver enterprise customers superb reliability and scalability with reduced costs and complexity. The powerful high-end servers strengthen HP's ability to support the requirements of business-critical environments and provide HP with an engine for growth in new and existing accounts and markets.

The market-leading, fault-tolerant HP NonStop servers are the core transaction engines for the performance and memory-intensive applications critical to financial, telecommunication and real-time e-business environments.

The HP NonStop S86000 server is the newest and highest-performing addition to HP's high-end enterprise server lineup. It features increased hardware performance and encompasses a comprehensive suite of the latest industry-standard interfaces, delivering dramatic improvements in application throughput and time to market.

In addition, HP has extended its customers' real-time enterprise capability with the naming of new independent software vendors (ISVs) as strategic business partners to the HP Zero Latency Enterprise (ZLE) initiative. Contributing valuable new software technologies and expertise are TIBCO Software Inc. and SeeBeyond Technology Corp.

"Today's announcement strengthens HP's high-end server lineup and demonstrates our strong commitment to the NonStop platform," said Scott Stallard, general manager, HP Business Critical Systems. "HP's NonStop, HP-UX and Alpha high-end servers combine to deliver the most complete and compelling portfolio for business-critical computing."

"This announcement demonstrates that HP's NonStop Enterprise Division is doing well in delivering open standards and expanding its application base," said Richard Partridge, vice president, enterprise servers, D.H. Brown Associates, Inc. "Additionally, it shows that the unique attributes of NonStop systems have found a home with HP."

Enhanced Hardware Drives Faster Performance

Developed on time and ahead of performance estimates, the new HP NonStop servers respond to the business world's ever-increasing need for speed and real-time information with enhanced hardware and performance boosts at all levels.

The premium-performance HP NonStop S86000 server features the latest-generation MIPS R14000 microprocessor, double the cache size and four times the maximum memory of existing NonStop S-series servers. Also included are a new high-speed disk drive, delivering a 25 percent improvement in I/O performance, and the new NonStop SQL/MX 1.5 relational database, complete with higher performance and valuable publish/subscribe and queuing functionality. These powerful new hardware components combine to deliver as much as a 90 percent processor performance boost over previous high-end NonStop S-series servers.(1)

"The reliability and scalability of HP NonStop servers will play an integral role in Sabre's ability to continue our success in all channels of the highly competitive travel industry," said Craig Murphy, chief technology officer, Sabre Holdings Corporation. "We look forward to harnessing the improved performance of the new NonStop S86000 servers in our powerful travel platform."

HP also has introduced the next-generation HP NonStop S76 server family. The S76 server family includes the currently available high-end S76000 and low-end S760. The midrange S7600 and entry-level S76 servers are expected to be available in the third quarter of 2002.

Extended Open Standards Expand Applications Base

The new NonStop servers also encompass a comprehensive suite of the latest industry-standard interfaces required to leverage Java™ and Web services.

Customers can take advantage of a high-performance Java Virtual Machine, certified to be compliant at the SDK 1.3.1 level and made scalable for enterprise environments; an enhanced J2EE-based enterprise application server (NonStop EAS release 1.1); an ultra-reliable, ultra-scalable Java messaging service (NonStop JMS); powerful publish/subscribe functionality embedded in the massively scalable database management system (NonStop SQL/MX 1.5); ultra-scalable Java database connectivity (JDBC); and comprehensive support for Web services standards, including SOAP and XML.

The increased performance of the NonStop application server combined with the NonStop S86000 server's enhanced hardware has produced as much as a 2.5 times performance boost in Java application performance, relative to the previous NonStop S74000 server.(1)

In addition, with these and other services, customers can create enterprise Java and Web services applications that inherit the industry-leading availability and scalability of NonStop servers, dramatically simplifying the complexity required for large-scale, business-critical implementations.

Radiant Logic Inc., a leading provider of directory and application integration software, used the extended Java services to partner with HP to deliver a Virtual Directory for NonStop Servers (VDNS). Using the VDNS, customers are able to implement a real-time enterprise directory infrastructure for e-business solutions that is fault-tolerant, scalable and highly available.

Extending Customers' Real Time Enterprise Capability

The HP NonStop server-based ZLE initiative provides customers with an architecture and platform that helps remove the complexity from two absolute business necessities: integrating vital company data in real time and leveraging legacy applications to deliver better customer service.

As part of today's announcement, TIBCO and SeeBeyond have surrounded the ZLE architecture with their powerful enterprise application integration (EAI) software. Both partners provide new capabilities that better enable HP to expose the full benefits of ZLE to end users by further expanding and strengthening the real-time enterprise integration capabilities of NonStop servers.

ZLE solutions enable a holistic view of an entire business and its operations by combining leading EAI solutions with operational data store technologies. This is supported by the NonStop server's unique ability to support mixed workloads of huge transaction volumes while performing massive database queries. The higher performance and increased memory size of the new NonStop servers enables end users to capture, collect and analyze more data, earlier and faster than any other platform in the industry.(2)

In addition, by enabling leading ISV solutions for NonStop servers, such as those from TIBCO and SeeBeyond, partners are able to offer powerful, scalable implementations of their solutions, and deliver substantial, tangible bottom-line results to end users.
