Press Release:

HP Connects Mobile Workers and Enterprises with Wireless "Hot Spots" and New Access Devices

HP (NYSE: HPQ) today launched a worldwide initiative aimed at providing Public Wireless LAN "hot spots" in public areas such as airports, hotels, restaurants and other locales. This offers mobile professionals affordable, secure high-speed access to email and other business applications using virtually any wireless local area network and mobile access device.

Complementing the initiative's hot spot infrastructure solutions, HP is offering new notebooks and iPAQ Pocket PCs to help mobile professionals live their lives on the go. The devices take advantage of wireless networks via Bluetooth and 802.11 standards to connect users to enterprise applications and the Internet -- regardless of where they find themselves.

HP's Public Wireless LAN hot spots offer the freedom and flexibility that hard-wired networks limit, while cellular and dial-up networks are not optimal with prohibitive costs and slow data-transfer rates. The infrastructure solutions combine design, implementation and management capabilities from HP Services, wireless applications and service-enablement software from key partners and a full range of HP server and access devices.

"HP's Public Wireless LANs are the next frontier of mobile computing, linking mobile workers to their enterprise resources and truly extending the reach of business," said Ann Livermore, executive vice president, HP Services. "With WLAN solutions already being implemented in airports, retail chains, hotels and other public venues, HP brings considerable expertise in IT infrastructure services and enabling infrastructure to support mobility. HP addresses the full spectrum of the wireless connectivity opportunity better than any other technology company."

According to Analysys Consulting, "the number of 802.11 wireless hot spots in public venues is predicted to grow to 41,000 and reach 21 million users by 2007." HP is fueling this growth by offering a total solution for deploying a public wireless LAN -- making it easy for enterprises to offer customers the same level of connectivity in public locales that workers and employees have come to expect in corporate environments.

HP's Solution for Public Wireless LAN Hot Spots

With more than 30 years' experience in networking, telecommunications and systems integration, HP has helped enterprises wirelessly enable more than 1 million mobile professionals and at the same time has helped public carriers manage the mobility needs of more than 70 million wireless subscribers in 20 countries.

Building on this experience, HP's solution for Public Wireless LAN Hot Spots includes:

  • Wireless LAN implementation, including access points, antennas, security, network integration and ongoing management;
  • Support services to provide round-the-clock, around-the-globe support for mobile platforms and applications;
  • Subscription services through key partners that offer customers public wireless access subscription services;
  • Consulting and integration services to support every facet of public wireless access, including wireless networks, applications, servers and access devices.
  • Software and wireless applications from partners worldwide, handling billing, access, 2.5-3G/WLAN roaming, authentication and authorization;
  • Service Management solutions from HP OpenView and partners to manage network elements, quality of service, inventory, provisioning and customer services;
  • Mobile access devices, including the award-winning iPAQ Pocket PC, and Compaq Evo Notebooks providing secure wireless-ready access;
  • Industry-standard servers delivering the reliability, scalability and manageability needed to support mobile applications; and
  • Financial services offering innovative technology leasing and financial asset management solutions that take away major upfront capital investments.

Hot Spots Equal Hot Opportunities

Today's venue can begin reaping the benefits of Public Wireless LAN hot spots by offering the service on a pay-for-use basis to mobile professionals seeking fast, secure public wireless access to the Internet and corporate intranets. In addition, using the same basic infrastructure to deploy both public and private use of a wireless LAN can provide businesses with greater return on infrastructure investments.

In Spain, HP is the services and infrastructure partner to Kubi Wireless, which is deploying wireless hot spots in hotels that cater to business travelers and conferences.

"Hot spot owners are investing for the future and are now able to offer high-speed wireless Internet access as a valuable service to their guests, thus increasing loyalty," said Anindya Ghosh, chief executive officer and founder, Kubi Wireless. "We have nine hotel and three airport lounge hot spots already operational or under contract. HP brings great capability and credibility to our solution."
