Press Release:

HP Inaugurates iCommunity Public-Private Partnership at Johannesburg World Summit 2002

Sustainable Development Project Demonstrates Hands-on Approach, Community Partnership and Innovative Technology as New Model for Engagement

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today extended its commitment to enabling economic and social development through innovative technology and public-private partnerships with the launch of an iCommunity in Mogalakwena, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

"With 90 percent of the world's population currently technologically excluded, our goal is to co-invent sustainable and scalable solutions to address the challenges of the global digital divide," said Carly Fiorina, HP chairman and chief executive officer. "By partnering with selected communities and understanding what new products and services are needed, we can tackle the really tough problems of sustainable rural development."

"No country or company has the entire solution to the challenges of sustainable development," said Debra Dunn, senior vice president, HP Corporate Affairs. "At HP, we believe that the creation of stronger and deeper partnerships offers greater potential for achieving true sustainable development success."

iCommunity is a key initiative in HP's e-Inclusion program. Its goal is to address individual community needs, including: technology access, education and learning opportunities, employment and job skills, community building and increased civic involvement, and economic development.

The Mogalakwena iCommunity effort began with a three-year memorandum of agreement with the provincial and local governments signed just prior to the summit. In each iCommunity, HP's emerging market solutions team worked with local community members to develop optimized solutions to improve literacy, create jobs and expand access to government, education and health services.

"Limpopo Province and Mogalakwena Municipality were selected because of the vision and commitment of the leadership and community stakeholders to partner with the private sector to invent new tools and services that will create social and economic growth," said Maureen Conway, vice president for e-Inclusion and emerging market solutions, HP Corporate Affairs.

"Over time, the Mogalakwena iCommunity partnership will become the foundation that will make us equal partners in the global village," said Premier Ngoake Ramathlodi of Limpopo, at the signing of the public-private partnership agreement between Limpopo Province and HP.

"I believe the commitment of the Mogalakwena community will drive the success of the iCommunity project not just for ourselves but for future generations," said Bob Mmola, Mayor of Mogalakwena Municipality.

From Kuppam, India, to Houston, Texas, HP's iCommunity initiatives are engaging local communities to accelerate sustainable social, economic and environmental development through the transfer of relevant technology and information skills.

"With the hands-on approach of both the community and HP South Africa employees, we will learn how information and communications technology can contribute to this community's advancement, as well as what it takes to replicate the model's successes throughout the region and even beyond South Africa," said Henry Ferriera, HP South Africa country manager.

e-Inclusion is an HP vision that encompasses all programs that provide technology access and services to the underserved. e-Inclusion is not about technology; it's about people. e-Inclusion is about a future where technology is accessible to everyone in the world as a means to learn, work and benefit from information.
