Press Release:

Tomorrow's Top Engineers Using HP Technology Today

No. 1-ranked Rose-Hulman Picks Compaq Evo N800c as Standard Notebook

Indiana's Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology -- last week ranked as the nation's best college among schools that offer the bachelor's or master's degree in engineering by U.S. News & World Report for the fourth year in a row -- signed a $1.3 million agreement with HP (NYSE: HPQ) naming the Compaq Evo N800c the institute's standard notebook PC for this year's freshman class.

"When you're trying to be the best, and maintain that posture of being the best, you need to align yourself with other organizations that share the same goals and same culture," said Louis Turcotte, vice president for instructional, administrative and information technology, Rose-Hulman. "HP has a long tradition as an engineering leader and having a culture known for great products, innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit."

As one of the first schools in the country to require all incoming freshmen to purchase an institute-standard notebook PC, Rose-Hulman has developed a technologically interactive teaching environment. At other colleges, labs are often separate from lecture classes. At Rose-Hulman, labs and lectures are integrated. In fact, for many courses, everyday is a lab day.

"Laptop capabilities are really getting impressive. Students don't have to go to a specialized computer lab; what we talk about in the classroom they can do where ever they are," said J.P. Mellor, assistant professor of computer science and software engineering. "Any classroom, particularly ones with wireless capabilities, becomes an automatic laboratory."

"It may sound funny, but Rose-Hulman's academic software almost needs the capabilities of a computer game," continued Mellor. "It's really hard to compare the Evo N800c with anything we've had in the past. In terms of performance -- the CPU, the memory, the graphics -- the Evo is a really well-architected notebook."

With a student body in which the typical student ranks in the top seven percent of all students who have taken the SAT or the ACT, Rose-Hulman has a demanding customer base. The institute has created a maintenance policy that pledges to its students and faculty that no student can be without a notebook PC for more than two hours. An obstacle for many vendors, a self-maintainer program is critical for Rose-Hulman. With support from HP, Rose-Hulman keeps their pledge by maintaining a complete vendor-certified maintenance facility on campus.

"Today's cutting-edge campus focuses on addressing different educational styles and developing solutions that enable students to collaborate, explore and expand their learning beyond the classroom. With these notebooks, students will be able to share ideas and learn in a way that best meets their needs," said Michael Humke, director of HP higher education. "HP is excited to have the opportunity to partner with a college like Rose-Hulman for its leadership in education and focus on teaching tomorrow's top engineers."
