HP Helps Equant Deliver Advanced VoIP Virtual Private Network Services to Enterprises

VoIP VPN Solution from HP Delivers High-quality Converged Services and Enables End-to-end IP Telephony

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 7, 2002

HP (NYSE: HPQ) today announced that Equant, an industry leader in global IP and data service for multinational businesses, is delivering its integrated Equant Voice for IP VPN (Virtual Private Network) and IP Telephony solution to global enterprises using HP's VoIP platform.

HP's VoIP VPN is an integrated, carrier-grade platform that has given Equant the ability to deliver value-added services that enterprises need to reduce costs and increase productivity, including contact center integration, private network features, advanced routing, call overflow management, traffic reporting, least cost routing and Web-based end-user provisioning. The HP VoIP VPN solution is fully compatible with traditional PBX and IP Telephony solutions.

With the HP solution, Equant is able to provision these services much more quickly than is possible with legacy systems -- and provide strong service level agreements for an IP voice VPN.

"Multinational businesses are seeing the benefits of convergence of voice with data through VoIP; however, this brings a new set of challenges," said Arjen Maarleveld, president of Products at Equant. "We are committed to providing flexible and robust application infrastructure services to multinational businesses which demand the best platforms to deliver global solutions. HP is the ideal partner for Equant because of its wealth of telecommunications experience and its ability to combine IP PBX with legacy PBX on a single VoIP VPN centralized management platform."

Equant has global reach, with its network connecting key business centers in 220 countries and territories and with local support in 191 countries. The company maintains an extensive portfolio of managed network services, including the market-leading IP VPN used by more than 600 global businesses.

"Equant is a leader in providing IP-based services and end-to-end IP telephony, and with HP's integrated VoIP VPN solution, Equant is able to provision these services much more quickly and efficiently than before," said Sebastiano Tevarotto, vice president and general manager, HP Network and Service Provider Business Unit. "As businesses leverage IP technologies to reduce costs and increase flexibility, HP and Equant will continue to cooperate to drive these business benefits into the market."

With its VoIP VPN, HP has integrated key components into an end-to-end solution: at the network layer, Cisco routers as the VoIP gateways; at the call control layer, NetCentrex softswitch to execute, control, and manage call routing on the IP network; at the service control layer, Atos Origin VPN application on HP Opencall service execution platform; and at the service management level, Atos Origin VPN provisioning on HP Opencall service management platform. HP provides its highly reliable, carrier-grade platforms running its HP-UX operating system.
