Press Release:

HP Helps Customers Protect Data with Local Backup and Recovery Solution for HP Compaq Business PCs

PALO ALTO, CALIF., AUG. 14, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced it will offer Altiris Local Recovery Pro on all HP Compaq business desktop and notebook PCs. This local backup and recovery solution enables users to quickly recover data in the event that information is accidentally deleted or the system becomes corrupted due to, for example, a virus attack.

"HP understands data backup and recovery is critical in any business environment, and we're delivering solutions that help reduce the total cost of owning PCs for our business customers," said Tad Bodeman, director, software marketing, HP Personal Systems Group. "HP's long-standing relationship with Altiris enables us to offer customers a complete, affordable backup and recovery solution."

Altiris Local Recovery Pro takes a "snapshot" of a computer's software image that includes user data and preferences. Using patented, intelligent technology, the snapshot is stored in a highly compressed form in a protected area on the computer's hard disk drive. If data is lost or damaged, it can easily be restored, by the user, without help desk assistance.

Priced starting at $20 per license with the purchase of a new HP Compaq Business desktop or notebook PC, Local Recovery Pro offers customers an affordably priced recovery and backup solution. The product also is available through HP for customers with installed HP business desktops and notebooks or other brand computers.

Local Recovery Pro provides several key features that are crucial in a backup and recovery solution. During a snapshot all critical user data is backed up, including open applications such as e-mail messages, presentations and word processing documents. A large number of snapshots are supported providing users the ability to roll back to a known good state or recover individual documents and files from a long historical period.

"Viruses, theft, hardware and software problems, and human error continually compromise business continuity of knowledge workers. HP customers can now leverage Altiris Local Recovery Solution technology to offset this threat," said Poul Nielsen, vice president of marketing and product strategy, Altiris. "With new features such as local backup and support for open and locked files, Altiris Local Recovery Pro for HP makes reliable configuration management affordable."

While Altiris Local Recovery Pro provides an essential level of data recovery protection, it does not guard against data lost due to hard drive failure or stolen and misplaced PCs. HP offers Altiris Recovery Solution to provide full protection against all data loss risks, providing a complete enterprise-level solution.

Altiris Recovery Solution also enables backup and recovery of PCs from a central administrative console utilizing the organization's network. The solution supports data backup to a protected area on the user's local hard disk drive, as well as data backup to a network storage area off the user's computer to address a high level of recovery protection.
