HP Brings Enterprise-class Storage Solutions to the Mid-market

PHOENIX, Storage Networking World, April 15, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today expanded its StorageWorks offerings by delivering industry-leading, enterprise-class storage functionality to the midrange market.

The company introduced the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 3000 and bolstered its array family capabilities with new software support. In addition, HP increased the capacity and performance of its midrange HP StorageWorks msl6000 and enterprise-class esl9000 tape libraries with HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 tape drives.

The new offerings are part of HP's ENSAextended strategy for delivering controllable, resilient and extensible storage. In particular, the HP StorageWorks eva3000 and HP StorageWorks msl6000 tape library enable midrange customers to build adaptive infrastructures for storage that increase responsiveness to business and IT changes.

"Today's announcement marks a significant expansion in HP's StorageWorks line and shows that we are executing against our clearly articulated roadmap," said Howard Elias, senior vice president and general manager, HP Network Storage Solutions. "Solutions like our StorageWorks EVA family and Ultrium 460 tape libraries keep customers ahead of data storage needs and HP ahead of the competition. These industry-leading technologies are now available to the midrange at an attractive entry point."

Midrange Offerings Deliver Enterprise Functions

Leveraging HP's proven storage virtualization technology, the HP StorageWorks eva3000 delivers enterprise-class data availability, reliability, utilization and ease of management to mid-market customers. The eva3000 enables greater use of storage assets than traditional arrays through:

  • a virtually capacity-free snapshot (Vsnap) function that delivers disk space savings and improves disk utilization efficiency, and

  • a virtually instantaneous snapclone copy capability, enabling immediate use of clone copies for significant time savings.

The system delivers industry-leading performance at 162,000 I/Os per second, up to twice the performance of competitive offerings. The simplified and powerful virtual-management capability of the eva3000 provides further cost savings by greatly reducing the time required to manage data. The system scales up to 56 disk drives or 8.2 terabytes.

"At Nth Generation we offer world-class enterprise storage solutions through partnering with the best technology providers," said Richard Baldwin, president and chief executive officer, Nth Generation. "HP's StorageWorks eva3000 will allow us to deliver enterprise-class functionality and services for SMBs who want to consolidate their direct-attached storage or extend their existing storage area network, at a price they can afford."

HP has also significantly enhanced its data protection offering for the midrange market. With the HP StorageWorks msl6000 tape library series, HP is the first to deliver high-performance SCSI Ultra 3 and hot-pluggable HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 tape drives in the same midrange library. The msl6000 delivers performance-oriented, easy-to-use, scalable and flexible automated tape storage for environments with uncertain data growth and shrinking backup windows.

The HP StorageWorks msl6060 tape library can deliver up to 900 GB per hour of available bandwidth for a highly reliable backup and restore solution for mission-critical data storage. Fully configured and scaled within a single 42U rack, the HP StorageWorks msl6000 family can support up to 3.6 TB per hour of available bandwidth and up to 96 TB of compressed backup capacity.

Enterprise Storage Enhancements

For enterprises that demand the highest performance and reliability for mission-critical, consolidated databases, HP now offers its HP StorageWorks esl9000 tape library with the choice of up to 16 HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 tape drives. The StorageWorks Ultrium 460 drive delivers 200 GB of native capacity and 30 MB/sec. native transfer rates.

The HP StorageWorks esl9595 tape library can deliver up to 5 TB per hour of available bandwidth for backup and restore while providing a highly reliable backup and restore solution for mission-critical data storage, with hot-swappable drives, an extended native capacity of up to 119 TB and scalability up to 64 drives and 2,278 cartridges. Fully configured and scaled, the HP StorageWorks ESL family can support up to 20 TB per hour of available bandwidth and up to 950 TB of compressed backup capacity.

HP StorageWorks Continuous Access EVA (CA EVA) is a new enterprise-class product that enables disaster recovery for the StorageWorks eva5000 and corporate data center. With the introduction of the StorageWorks eva3000, HP has renamed its established, modular EVA solution to the HP StorageWorks eva5000. The eva5000 will now provide CA EVA remote copy replication features for business continuity and high-availability solutions.

StorageWorks CA EVA performs real-time replication by maintaining synchronous sequential I/O write order preservation. For flexible remote management, a graphical user interface layered on the HP OpenView Storage Management Appliance provides an intuitive interface management tool for setup and control of data replication features. CA EVA takes advantage of HP virtualization technology at the controller level, delivering more efficient data utilization and replication, with optimum data integrity and high availability.

"While in the process of consolidating our entire IT environment, we were looking into data replication solutions which provided us guaranteed business continuity," said E.H Ubels, chief information officer, Deloitte and Touche Netherlands. "In a world where 24x7 data availability isn't exceptional anymore, we have chosen HP StorageWorks Continuous Access software for our SAN environment, providing us with the protection we were looking for."

Over campus, metropolitan or even continental distances, HP StorageWorks CA EVA performs remote mirroring and enables disaster recovery within minutes or seconds. This is enabled by up to the last I/O synchronous data integrity and fast consistent applications recovery. For local replication of data, CA EVA utilizes HP StorageWorks Business Copy's management of snaps and snapclone features which apply to both source and destination arrays. CA EVA is available now on the HP StorageWorks eva5000 and planned to be available in the third quarter of 2003 on the HP StorageWorks eva3000.

HP Broadens Software Offerings

HP OpenView Storage Provisioner support has been extended to support the StorageWorks eva3000. Automated provisioning minimizes the repetitive, time-consuming and costly steps involved in manual storage provisioning, thus enabling storage administrators to focus on higher-level tasks.

HP OpenView Storage Provisioner helps deliver an adaptive infrastructure by allowing storage to be allocated according to business policies and procedures. It also enables requests for additional storage to be satisfied immediately, eliminating costly delays associated with having to manually reconfigure existing arrays. Automating the provisioning process protects the storage environment from manual errors and the associated downtime. The software enables further cost savings by providing a current and accurate view of available storage, reducing the potential for over purchasing and over allocation of valuable storage resources.

At the FOSE 2003 Best New Technology Awards, HP OpenView Storage Provisioner received top honors as the winner in the Networking Software category. A panel of judges from GCN and Washington Technology selected the finalists in each category based on innovation, features, relevance to the federal market and value.

HP StorageWorks Business Copy EVA and Business Copy Upgrade User Interface are local replication applications for the HP StorageWorks EVA, Modular Array and Enterprise Modular Array families. The software incorporates snapshot and cloning capabilities with an improved user interface to assist the storage administrator. Indispensable for critical data center operations such as non-disruptive backups, frequent snapshots of high value databases and data mining, the software delivers bottom-line benefits of increased business continuity, manageability, data availability and productivity savings.

Further cost efficiencies are gained as the licensing is based on the capacity used in replication, rather than total installed raw capacity. This is possible because replication is based on capacity of volumes being copied rather than total raw array capacity.
