Press Release:

HP ProCurve Outpaces Competitor Switch Growth for Second Consecutive Quarter

Dell'Oro Report Reveals Industry Leading Ethernet Switch Growth at HP

HP ProCurve Networking was the fastest growing layer 3 Ethernet switch vendor for the first quarter of calendar year 2003, according to research results from the Dell'Oro Group.(1) This marks the second consecutive quarter that HP ProCurve has outpaced the growth of both the market and competitors in total layer 3 ports shipped.

The report, which examines the overall Ethernet switch market, revealed that from Q4 2002 to Q1 2003, HP ProCurve grew 181 percent in total layer 3 port shipments, which resulted in an increase of market share growth from 5.1 percent to 12.8 percent.

In terms of layer 3 10/100 modular port shipments, HP ProCurve bypassed competitors to move from the No. 3 position to the No. 1 position in the industry and now commands an estimated 36.3 percent market share. The company also moved from the No. 6 position to the No. 3 position in terms of layer 3 1000 modular port shipments. HP ProCurve's total layer 3 growth outpaced every tracked competitor, including 3Com, Cisco, Extreme and Nortel.

"Our enterprise customers realize that the advanced applications they are considering or deploying - such as security, mobility and Voice over IP - require advanced layer 3 functionality at the edge of their networks," said John McHugh, vice president and general manager, HP ProCurve Networking Business. "This market share growth validates our HP ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture and our commitment to providing cost-effective solutions that support the migration of intelligence to the edge of the network."

The HP ProCurve Networking Business grew five percent from Q4 2002 to Q1 2003 in total layer 2 through layer 7 ports shipped, solidifying its position as the No. 3 overall Ethernet switch vendor and closing the gap on the No. 2 vendor, 3Com, which saw its market share decline to 10 percent. Cisco recognized no appreciable market share gains, reflective of the market, which remained flat.
