Press Release:

HP Investment Promotes East Baltimore Small Business Development

HP Baltimore Digital Village Program Will Assist Local Entrepreneurs with Technology Tools and Access to Training to Spur Economic Growth

Expanding HP's (NYSE:HPQ) investment in the Baltimore community, the Small Business Resource Center (SBRC) today unveiled the Small Business Development Institute. Part of HP's Baltimore Digital Village program, the institute will select approximately 15 local businesses to participate in the first phase of the program, which will provide training, technology and strategic planning assistance.

The launch is part of today's HP Baltimore Digital Village second anniversary celebration, featuring government officials, HP executives and Baltimore Digital Village executives. Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley will proclaim today "Baltimore Digital Village Day" at an afternoon ceremony at Baltimore City Hall.

"HP is excited to extend the benefits of our e-inclusion program and the Baltimore Digital Village to the SBRC and small business owners in East Baltimore," said Janiece Evans-Page, director, e-inclusion and global solutions, HP Philanthropy and Education. "Our partnership with the SBRC will help provide entrepreneurs with technology solutions and business education to compete successfully in the digital economy."

"Too often, entrepreneurs in underserved communities do not have the basic technology tools critical to evolve their visions into fully functioning businesses," said Paul Taylor, executive director, SBRC. "The Small Business Development Institute appreciates HP's commitment to East Baltimore's small business owners and we thank them for these indispensable contributions that will support small businesses in our community."

The small businesses selected by the Small Business Development Institute will receive an HP Small Business Productivity solution, which includes a notebook PC and docking station, a monitor, a personal digital assistant and an all-in-one printer. In addition, the businesses will have the opportunity to participate in a 12-week training course with the University of Baltimore to earn a Certificate of Entrepreneurship.

In February 2001, East Baltimore was selected as a participant of the HP Digital Village program and received $5 million in cash, equipment and services. HP's Baltimore Digital Village supports learning for youths and adults, strengthens and connects community organizations and businesses, and enhances the delivery of community services. Over the past two years, students, teachers and business owners have benefited from Baltimore Digital Village programs.

HP has a long history of supporting small businesses, including working with its partners to educate small business owners on IT applications to help grow their businesses. In addition, HP is a leader in delivering technology to key organizations aiding small businesses. For example, HP recently awarded microenterprise development grants to nine U.S. nonprofit organizations - including Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore, Inc. - to accelerate the ability of these organizations to advance economic growth in diverse, low-income communities.

HP also is a sponsor of the Business Matchmaking Program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Small Business Administration, which pairs small businesses with federal, state and local government agencies for procurement opportunities.

The Baltimore Digital Village is part of a growing global network of communities HP is partnering with as part of its e-inclusion program. This program seeks to provide people access to greater social and economic opportunities by closing the gap between technology-empowered and technology-excluded communities.
