HP and Scholastic Kick Off Second Annual Create-a-Calculator Contest

Students across the country invited to submit imaginative inventions for the chance to win more than $11,000 in scholarships and prizes
PALO ALTO, Calif., March 1, 2004

HP and Scholastic Magazines, a division of the global children's publishing and media company, today launched the second annual Create-a-Calculator contest. The nationwide competition invites teachers to enter unique HP calculator design submissions from their 5th-12th grade students for the chance to win more than $11,000 in scholarships and prizes.

Last year, HP and Scholastic received more than 7,000 entries in the inaugural contest.

HP and Scholastic developed the Create-a-Calculator contest to reach out to students and challenge them to design the most original calculators they could imagine. First prize winners in two categories - grades 5-8 and 9-12 - will earn $2,000 and $3,000 cash scholarships, respectively, and HP calculators. The five runners-up in both categories will receive HP calculators. Some winners may see their original ideas incorporated into future calculators built by HP.

"HP was very pleased by the number of entries received in last year's contest and impressed with the creative features students and teachers suggested we incorporate into our next generation of calculators," said Fred Valdez, general manager, calculator division, Personal Systems Group, HP. "This contest allows students to tap into their creative minds and suggest ideas on creating calculators which they believe will help them throughout their educational journey. For the high school students, we welcome specific product feature improvement in graphing capability as well as other novel ideas. We look forward to receiving this year's ideas and will explore ways to include them in HP's future product offering."

Editors from Scholastic Instructor, Scholastic Administrator and Scholastic Dynamath magazines will complete the first round of judging for the contest and a committee of industry experts will select final winners. The school that sends in the largest number of qualifying student submissions will receive 50 HP 39g+ graphing calculators. The teacher with the greatest number of students who submit qualifying entries will receive a $750 cash voucher toward the purchase of HP products.
