HP Enables Mobile Operators in Europe and Asia to Improve Management of Telecom Operations

EMT, Estonia's leading mobile operator, and Korean operator KTF are company's latest wins among telecom service providers

HP today added two mobile operators in Europe and Asia to the list of more than 200 communications companies across the globe that the company is helping to streamline operations and, ultimately, improve their customers' experience.

The customer wins - EMT in Estonia and KTF in Korea - are in the fast-growing operations and business support systems (OSS and BSS) segment of the communications industry. OSS and BSS capabilities, such as billing and service management, have become vitally important to network and service providers as customers increase their usage of mobile phones for data and multimedia services as well as traditional voice services.

HP's latest OSS and BSS offerings will be showcased at TeleManagement World in Nice, France, May 16-19.

The leading mobile operator in Estonia, EMT, is one of the first to take advantage of the full HP OpenView software suite to integrate the management of both telecom and IT networks and services. With HP OpenView at the heart of EMT's own Integrated Service Assurance program, EMT now has a single, overall view of the core GSM/GPRS mobile network elements, the IT elements that support the mobile services (SMS, MMS, and other value-add services), as well as internal IT elements such as databases, enterprise applications and mail servers.

With 1 million new subscribers every six months, Korean mobile operator KTF selected HP for a more scalable and flexible mediation system to capture and process billing information for both voice and data services. KTF is now able to bill for different kinds of content and offer subscribers different billing options, which, in turn, gives it the flexibility to introduce innovative services and build new revenue streams.

HP helps EMT link telecom and IT domains to increase efficiency and improve service

The single, service-level view of both telephony and IT networks gives EMT the tools and processes to identify and resolve network and service problems quickly and efficiently. In addition to increasing internal efficiency, the HP OpenView products support high levels of network and service availability. These capabilities enable EMT to deliver superior quality of service for its 601,400 prepaid and postpaid wireless subscribers, as well as internal employees.

HP, working with partner Ericsson, integrated HP OpenView TeMIP on the telephony network side with HP OpenView Operations on the IT side. These two solutions were brought together in HP OpenView Service Desk, which combines help desk, configuration database and process management tools for rapid incident resolution and control of problem, configuration and change management processes (based on ITSM/ITIL guidelines).

In similar projects across Asia, Europe and the Americas, HP has created end-to-end service management solutions that fully integrate management of both telephony and IT networks. Typically, the solution includes HP OpenView TeMIP and Network Node Manager for telephony and IP management, as well as HP OpenView Operations on the IT side, along with HP OpenView Internet Services and HP OpenView Service Desk.

As at EMT, operators have leveraged the integration into greater efficiency, reduced internal costs, higher network availability, and better service for both mobile customers and internal employees.

KTF selects HP to capture and process billing information for voice and data services

For its 12 million South Korean subscribers, fast-growing operator KTF provides a wide range of voice and data services, including mobile Internet services that are targeted to specific subscriber groups according to age and content preference.

Working with KTF to understand its business requirements, HP provided the HP OpenView Internet Usage Manager (IUM) mediation solution as well as the integration services for deployment, testing and validation. The project was completed in just over five months.

HP OpenView portfolio enhanced for next-generation OSS

The HP Integrated Service Management (ISM) blueprint, which integrates OSS and BSS, provides carriers and operators with the comprehensive, highly adaptive, service-oriented approach they need to effectively manage their networks and services, improve mediation and billing, and assure quality of service for customers.

To strengthen HP ISM, the company is unveiling significant improvements in key products in the HP OpenView OSS portfolio - as well as greater integration among the different products. HP ISM, with the current adoption of OSS-J standards, continues to increase compliance with the New Generation OSS initiative.

In service activation, HP OpenView Service Activator 4.1 adds support for IP-Virtual Private Networks, including automated activation of multi-vendor IP-VPN/MPLS networks. In service assurance, HP OpenView TeMIP 5.2 delivers better network management with root cause analysis down to routing protocols, auto-discovery, service impact analysis, problem resolution and performance management. In usage mediation, HP OpenView IUM 4.5 adds support for convergent charging (real-time active mediation), simplifies implementation of triple play, VoIP, and content services, and adds features to control revenue leakage and enhance fraud management.

HP OpenView products are used by more than 400 service providers worldwide. The flagship OSS product, HP OpenView TeMIP, is deployed with 220 customers and supports recent key industry standards such as NGOSS, OSS through Java (OSS-J), Multi-Technology Network Management and 3GPP.
