Press Release:

U.S. Small Business Administration Honors HP with Small Business Procurement Achievement Award

Award recognizes HP for most outstanding small business procurement programs
WASHINGTON, May 25, 2004

HP is the recipient of the 2004 SBA Administrator's Small Business Procurement Achievement Award. The award was presented by U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Hector V. Barreto during the SBA Expo '04 in Orlando on May 21 in recognition of HP's unique and continuous commitment to providing contract opportunities to small businesses throughout the country.

In 2003, HP awarded more than $2 billion, or 53 percent of total procurement purchases to U.S. small businesses through internal programs such as the HP Multicultural Procurement and Sales Support Programs.

"We are honored by the SBA's recognition of our efforts and commitment to small business. In addition to partnering with the SBA to make public and private sector procurement opportunities a reality for small business through the Business Matchmaking initiative, HP has a longstanding commitment to create real procurement opportunities," said Robyn West, vice president, Small and Medium Business, Americas, HP. "We will continue to be a vocal advocate and partner to small businesses everywhere."

"Through their efforts in procurement and as an SBA partner in Business Matchmaking, HP is an active advocate for small business," said SBA Administrator Barretto. "The resounding success of Business Matchmaking has opened the door for small businesses across the nation to participate in, and profit from, the procurement process."

Business Matchmaking

The largest small business initiative in SBA history, Business Matchmaking is a public/private partnership between the SBA and HP that provides a major economic stimulus to small businesses by decentralizing the procurement process and taking contract opportunities to the streets of America.

Previous Business Matchmaking events held in 2003 and early 2004 have resulted in more than 14,640 face-to-face meetings between small business owners and procurement officials with $90 million dollars in contracts awarded to date.

Since the inception of the program, HP procurement officers have dedicated more than 1,800 hours to Business Matchmaking.

In addition to HP's participation in Business Matchmaking as a buyer, HP technology drives the program's operations. This includes registration, education and training, as well as Web site support and on-site Internet access stations.

In September 2003, SBA Administrator Barreto presented HP with the SBA Small Business Champion Award for its strong commitment and support of small business.
