HP Showcases Technology to Connect People to Information and Entertainment - Wherever They Are

HP today introduced a widerange of mobile computing devices, services and infrastructuredesigned to significantly enhance the way individuals connect tothe information, entertainment and people that matter most to them- wherever they are.

At the third annual HPMobility Summit, held this year in Shanghai, the company unveiledmore than a dozen notebook PCs that deliver a balance of form andfunction to both enrich the user experience and reflect a newpersonal technology lifestyle.

Other products and servicesintroduced include mobile device management software, mobilemessaging and collaboration services, and 3G mobile videosolutions, including messaging and mobile blogging services.

HP also announced "mscape,"a prototype software suite and website that overlays digital sight,sounds and interactions on the physical world to create immersiveand interactive experiences.

"Rather than simplyenabling products with wireless connectivity, HP is helpingcustomers make connections to the people and information that areimportant to them," said Todd Bradley, executive vice president,Personal Systems Group, HP. "These connections increasingly includerich digital media such as full motion video, graphics and voicefor a real-time interactive experience, and HP is providing thedevices, services and IT infrastructure to make this happen."

Notebooks for roadwarriors and entertainment enthusiasts

Building on its position asthe No. 1 notebook vendor in the world,(1) HP unveiled13 new notebook models, including a sleek, ultra-light Tablet PCand the company's first 20-inch diagonal entertainmentnotebook.

For users seeking ahome-theater experience, the HP Pavilion HDX Entertainment SeriesNotebook PC, featuring an exclusive HP Imprint design called "theDragon," delivers rich multimedia performance with a big 20.1-inchdiagonal display. Capable of true HD 1080presolution,(2) The HDX Entertainment notebook is amultimedia enthusiast's dream, perfect for watching movies, editingvideo or gaming.

In addition to multi-mediafeatures, the new HP Pavilion consumer notebook PCs featureeye-catching designs with "Radiance," an HP Imprint pattern withsubtle lines across the surface of the notebook to hint at theinterconnectedness of work and play.

The new ultra-thin HPCompaq 2710p Notebook PC combines conventional notebookproductivity and tablet PC flexibility into a single convertiblenotebook. In addition, it offers an optional integrated camera forconvenient video conferencing(3) and image capture, anHP NightLight on the keyboard to improve visibility in low light,and integrated business card reader software. It also features asilver finish with brushed aluminum accents and incorporates thelatest technologies, such as an Illumi-Lite display for weight andpower consumption savings.

HP's business notebooklineup is among the industry's first to feature Intel® Centrino®Pro Mobile technology,(4,5) which offers built-in remotemanageability and proactive security. The notebooks also include HPsecurity innovations such as Drive Encryption for HPProtectTools,(6) a full volume encryption technologythat renders the hard drive unreadable if the notebook or harddrive is lost or stolen.

Additionally, six of theseven new business notebook series boast a choice of mobilebroadband connectivity options, and the new ultra-light notebookswill support CDMA 1xEV-DO Revision A,(7) which offers ahigher EV-DO connection speed.

Managing the mobileenvironment

The HP Enterprise MobilitySuite, a device management software solution designed to easemobile device deployments within the enterprise, allows customersto cost-effectively launch and manage advanced mobile services thatare more secure and reliable.

The HP Enterprise MobilitySuite provides the high levels of functionality that enterprisesneed, including over-the-air software updates, deviceconfiguration, diagnostics and device security. With HP MobileDevice Management solutions, business IT has the power to smoothmobile device deployments, migration and replacement. Over-the-airdevice configuration allows for firmware over-the-air ROM updates,active error monitoring and remote detection and repair. ITdepartments can also boost mobile security with remote devicelock/unlock, remote wipe and over-the-air push of securityapplications.

The Mobility Suite is thefirst mobile device management solution introduced by HP since itsDecember 2006 acquisition of Bitfone, the software and servicescompany that pioneered standards-based, over-the-air devicemanagement for the wireless industry.

HP's new mobile softwaresolutions will benefit people who enjoy interactive video on theirmobile phones and mobile operators who want to leverage networkinvestments and generate new revenue.

The HP OpenCall VideoSolutions portfolio is a flexible, standards-based set of offeringsthat consists of three ready-to-deploy solutions that can helpmobile operators make their 3G video services more attractive tosubscribers - and easier to use.

The three solutions alsoenable mobile phone users to send and receive video messages aseasily as voice messages; create animated call response messagesthat prompt the caller to leave a photo, video or voice message;and enjoy a wide range of video services, such as video blogging incommunity portals and participation TV, as well as accessingprofessional video content.

From cyberspace toreal space

The new mscape site,, is a beta program that providesconsumers and professional developers with the tools to design,build and share interactive, location-based experiences calledmediascapes that run on HP iPAQ or other GPS-enabled handhelddevices with the Windows® Mobile operatingsystem.(8)

GPS enthusiasts, gamers aswell as travel and outdoor enthusiasts with mobile devices runningan mscape player can move through the physical world and triggerlocation-based digital media - including images, sounds, audio andvideo - adding a layer of cyberspace to real space.

The website provides anauthoring toolkit, mscape player, training and tips to design andbuild mediascapes. Users can also share the mediascapes they havecreated with friends, family and communities around the world bypublishing them on the site.

Virtualcollaboration and Management of Change

End-User WorkplaceSolutions are designed to help users get vital work done moreefficiently from more locations. New virtual collaboration servicesinclude messaging services, content management services andconference services. Designed to drive efficiency and increaseemployee productivity while enabling greater customer satisfaction,the new services - including design, migration, integration andongoing management - help enterprises consolidate and integratetheir virtual collaboration environment with minimal upfrontexpense or user disruption.

HP also announced itsend-user Management of Change methodologies for mobility, servicedesk and collaboration to help enterprises predict and overcomeissues associated with end-user adoption and acceptance of newtechnologies and e-support models. Management of Change is asystematic approach to proactively plan, manage and stabilizechange processes, from both organizational and individualperspectives.

Other new offerings includeflexible mobile infrastructure management capabilities and agroundbreaking total cost of ownership service that assistsenterprises in identifying the real costs and best practices ofmobile and desktop management.

Mobile DigitalLaboratories

HP and Saltire Scientificare teaming to develop Mobile Digital Laboratories for thesecondary mathematics and science education market. Based on an HP39gs or 40gs graphing calculator, the Mobile Digital Laboratoriessolution allows users to collect and analyze real world data inreal time.

The easy-to-use MobileDigital Laboratory enables math and science students to quicklycapture nearly imperceptible everyday data - such as the flicker offluorescent lights and waveforms of the human voice - andmathematically analyze it using familiar functions on an HPcalculator.
