HP Enhances Platform to Help Mobile Operators Deliver Personalized, Interactive Multimedia Services

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 27, 2007

HP today announced an enhanced media platform to help telecom operators accelerate growth by providing their mobile and broadband customers with a wide variety of personalized, interactive multimedia services.

The HP OpenCall Media Platform 4.0 is a carrier-grade media server that handles call connections and the special digital processing that is required for services offering multimedia content, such as rich video and advanced messaging in social networking communities. By handling multimedia efficiently, HP OpenCall Media Platform helps operators deliver more attractive services, generate more revenue and increase customer loyalty.

Available for broadband and wireless networks, the platform’s powerful technology enables people to use their mobile devices and PCs to enjoy a host of personalized, interactive experiences including: interactive voice and video response systems, multimedia portals to video and music, video messaging, video blogging, audio and video conferencing, video sharing, participation TV, and personalized video ring-back tones, among others.

HP OpenCall Media Platform can run multiple interactive multimedia services on a single platform, thus enabling operators to consolidate many legacy systems – and further reduce costs.

Flexibility for telecom operators

The HP OpenCall Media Platform is based on industry standards to provide operators with a high degree of flexibility. For example, operators can deploy HP OpenCall Media Platform in several ways, either in a web services environment using VoiceXML or Java™ or in a next-generation environment based on the Internet protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture.

For additional flexibility, HP OpenCall Media Platform relies on open standard hardware such as rack-mount and blade servers that run the Linux operating system.

This flexible, standards-based approach provides telecom operators with long-term viability and investment protection. It also helps operators optimize costs and accelerate time-to-market.

The platform provides a programming interface that makes it easier for developers to create the innovative, exciting new services that will attract subscribers – and generate revenue. HP has attracted a large community of partners and developers who create new services based on OpenCall software, including the HP OpenCall Media Platform.

HP OpenCall Media Platform supports multiple network types for additional flexibility: circuit-switched legacy networks, both 2G for voice and data and 3G for voice, data and multimedia; digital networks; and broadband/Internet for content access.

Ready for IMS

HP OpenCall Media Platform 4.0 incorporates the media resource function (MRF) capability so that it is ready for deployment in emerging IMS networks.

A key feature of the MRF capability is that it enables HP OpenCall Media Platform to support the real-time, simultaneous blending of voice, data and multimedia services on IMS networks. For example, in an IMS network, wireless users can create an audio or video conference and share images and videos using the presence information of call participants all in one integrated session that is seamless and easy for the callers.

By bundling sets of services that support people’s on-the-go lifestyles, industry observers anticipate that IMS-based networks will help increase average revenue per user.
