PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 21, 2009

HP today announced thatWikia, the company that brings together millions of people tocreate and discover engaging content on every topic, will offerprint-on-demand services to its communities through MagCloud, an HP cloud service thatautomates magazine publishing.

The collaboration betweenHP and Wikia will allow fans, aspiring publishers and writers ofall types to create magazines based on the high-quality content andimages created by Wikia’s more than 50,000 communities.

“By teaming with Wikia, HPis bringing some of the richest community content on the web tolife in a glossy magazine format,” said Andrew Bolwell, director,New Business Initiatives, HP. “Thanks to HP’s MagCloud, Wikia’spassionate communities of readers will be able to enjoy informationon their favorite bands, hobbies, comic books and more in atangible print format that is both cost-effective andenvironmentally friendly.”

To publish a glossy,full-color magazine for friends, the coffee table or massdistribution, Wikia users select the content and cover page, andthen order their request through MagCloud. For example, a Wikiauser could create a custom magazine with original content found inwikis about Lady Gaga, vintage dress patterns and cooking.

“Wikia and MagCloud are theperfect match to marry compelling online content with a rich printexperience,” said Jimmy Wales, co-founder, Wikia. “With millions offreely available and relevant articles written by dedicatedcommunities, Wikia broadly covers thousands of topics, from Marvelcomic book characters to ABC Television’s popular drama ‘Lost.’ Webelieve that Wikia’s communities will use the MagCloud printingservice to reach broader audiences, and inspire people to engage ina new wave of magazine publishing 2.0.”

By using an on-demandpublishing service model, HP eliminates the carrying costs, wasteand inventory issues previously associated with magazinepublishing, making it possible to publish content that waspreviously economically unviable to print. MagCloud’s printingprocess uses HP Indigodigital presses to produce full-bleed, magazine-qualitypublications.

MagCloud started as anincubation project in HP Labs, thecompany’s central research arm, to evaluate new, onlinemarketplaces for buying and selling custom magazines with aprint-on-demand delivery method. Since its launch in February, theservice has presented a significant opportunity for brands andcontent publishers to build and extend their community reach usinghighly targeted print products.

In an increasingly digitalworld, HP is using Internet-based platforms to provide new businessmodels and services to help customers capitalize on the industry’sshift toward cloud computing, a driving force behind HP’s “Everythingas a Service“ vision.
