Jeppesen Selects Five HP Indigo Digital Presses to Complete Its Analogue-to-digital Print Transition
Multimillion-dollarupgrade expected to reduce waste, improve operationalflexibility
BARCELONA, Spain, 07October 2010 - Jeppesen, the Boeing Commercial Airplanes subsidiarythat delivers aviation charts, data and operational tools essentialto the global transportation industry, is converting its remaininganalogue offset chart-printing operations to digital productionfollowing a multimillion-dollar purchase of five HP Indigo W7200Digital presses.
The five-press deal is onethe largest installations ever completed for continuous-feed Indigopresses. The presses are currently being installed and will be usedto print charts starting next month.
"The HP Indigo W7200delivers peak digital colour productivity, representing thecollective knowledge, expertise and technical advancementsassembled since the introduction of the first continuous-feedIndigo press 15 years ago," said Alon Bar-Shany, vice president andgeneral manager, Indigo Division, HP. "This significant expansionof Jeppesen's digital press fleet sets the stage for Jeppesen toaccomplish a highly successful analogue-to-digital transition."
Three of the presses arebeing installed at Jeppesen's headquarters facility in Englewood,Colorado, North America, where they will operate alongside anotherHP Indigo W7200 the company purchased and installed earlier thisyear. Currently, the Englewood facility produces half of itsaviation chart work using digital printing, with the remainderprinted on analogue offset devices. Jeppesen intends to shift allof its standard-size aviation chart work from offset presses todigital.
The other two HP IndigoW7200 presses in the purchase are being installed at Jeppesen'sfacility in Neu-Isenburg, Germany, near Frankfurt - an all-digitalfacility that will use the press's faster speeds and improved easeof use to improve productivity.(1)
"One of the goals of ourprinting operation centres is to use the best available technologyto increase efficiency, service and quality," said Dan Olivas, director of Production and Distribution at Jeppesen's Englewoodfacility. "When it comes to continuing the transformation digitalprinting has brought to our business, the new HP Indigo W7200presses fit the bill 100 percent."
Significant savingswith digital
The HP Indigo W7200 pressesare replacing several HP Indigo w3200-series presses Jeppeseninstalled starting in 2004, when it embarked on a highly successfuldigital-adoption process that trimmed overhead and significantlyreduced waste.
Jeppesen keeps itscustomers updated with essential information by printing new chartswhen there is an official change to procedures, airspace or otherinformation for a particular location. Analogue offset productionfor the charts requires a large amount of manual collation as newpages are assembled and delivered to customers. Digital printinghas given Jeppesen the ability to print new charts in sequentialorder, eliminating the collation of hundreds of millions of newcharts the company produces each year.
In the past, the companyalso stored large quantities of offset-produced charts toaccommodate new orders. Those inventories, which could number inthe tens of thousands per chart, were frequently discarded when achart was revised. With digital printing, Jeppesen has stoppedproducing overruns and switched to a print-on-demand model for newcustomer orders.
"Before we used digitalprinting, fulfilling some of our customer requests could be verycostly," said Vincent Van Over. "Now, we provide better service ata lower cost, and we are looking forward to seeing continuedbenefits that will come about with the higher level of productivitythe HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press offers."

Designed to meetoffset-quality, application-focused production needs, the HP IndigoW7200 press prints up to 7.5 million pages per month. It canproduce up to 240 four-colour or up to 960 monochrome A4-size pagesper minute at resolutions up to 2,400 x 2,400 dots per inch.
Since its release inSeptember 2009, the HP Indigo W7200 has been installed at customersites worldwide for publishing, photo specialty, transactional/transpromotional and direct marketing print production. Next week,HP will highlight the press at the Graph Expo trade show (Oct. 3-6in McCormick Place, Chicago) in booth 1200.
The new presses willoperate using HP SmartStream Production Pro Print Server systems toefficiently manage the flow of data to each press. Jeppesen also isinstalling new HP SmartStream Production Analyzer software, whichmonitors, tracks, benchmarks and reports production metrics. Thesoftware provides customers with a deeper understanding of theirproduction floor so they can make efficiency-minded managementdecisions.
When making its purchase,Jeppesen received flexible, vendor-direct financing from HPFinancial Services, the company's leasing and life cycle assetmanagement services division.
