HP Inspires Students to Discover New Ways of Learning throughout their Education Journey

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, April 1, 2010 – HP, a leader in education technology, is enabling students from early to tertiary education, including those with special needs, to discover new ways of learning. Most recently, HP announced that it is bringing PC access to more students at a lower cost, empowering students to learn beyond the classroom with the latest mobility solutions; and helping students cultivate specialized professional skills to take them from basic computer literacy to being able to collaborate, create and solve problems through technology.

“HP is helping educational institutions transform towards student-centered, personalized learning environments by leveraging technology in an affordable and sustainable way,” said Danny Lee, Country General Manager, Personal Systems Group, HP Malaysia. “Our offerings empower students to learn at their own pace anytime and anywhere, allow teachers to easily manage a classroom and free up IT managers from time-consuming maintenance.”

Evolving from a student’s first learning experience to higher education, HP offers the very best tools to cater to every stage of a student’s learning life cycle so that they can discover the very best in themselves.

Lower cost PC access for more students

The HP MultiSeat Computing Solution comprises of a host PC, the HP MultiSeat ms6000 PC, to be shared with up to 10 students, connected via the HP MultiSeat t100 Thin Client. This shared resourcing model utilises the host PC’s excess processing resources to operate the additional computing stations. Only the host PC is powered up, meaning less energy consumption and associated costs, thus enabling schools to increase student access to technology at a much reduced cost to build computer literacy skills from a young age.

  • IT managers can save a vast amount of time spent on client management, maintenance and upgrades through managing only one host PC instead of 10 PCs.
  • Each HP MultiSeat t100 Thin Client is energy efficient, consuming only 2.5 watts of power, reducing energy costs by up to 80 percent (1).

The HP MultiSeat Computing solution is fully licensed and powered by Microsoft’s new Windows MultiPoint Server 2010.

An alternative to managing a large, low-cost yet highly manageable and secure network of PCs, HP introduced the HP t5740 Flexible Series Thin Client. Easing the IT manager’s workload, the HP Thin Client, when deployed in a virtual desktop environment, automatically deploys upgrades, patches, and new applications. This effectively simplifies management and minimises operational costs since configuration changes can be made from a centralized deployment server.

Matching individual learning styles

Having established solid computer literacy from young, students are empowered with the right skills to extend learning beyond the classroom, enabled by a notebook PC. Learning on the go gives students a springboard into the future of working in an Internet-connected world.

For early education to pre-college students, the HP Mini 5102 is ideal as its form factor is smaller than most textbooks, fitting nicely in a backpack or can be easily carried using the optional handle. The HP Mini is perfect for a simplified, Internet-centric experience for “information snacking” and content consumption (2).

For students in tertiary schools which require a full performance notebook, HP introduced the HP ProBook 6440b Notebook PC. The HP ProBook Notebook PC series provides HP’s best combination of innovative business features, functionality and value.

Specialized skills for professional development

As students seek higher education towards preparing for a career of their choice, HP is enabling schools to develop ideal training and development environments so that students are able to cultivate specialized skills. For example, developers, engineers, designers, and animators who need intense graphics and highly reliable performance across the most demanding applications require multimedia labs that are equipped with the most powerful compute-intensive PCs such as HP’s range of workstations. As the industry leader, HP’s workstations are used by the most demanding customers to design everything from running shoes and race cars to animated characters and deep-sea submersibles, as well as to manage billions of dollars of tradable securities, labs and mission-critical IT environments.

HP’s latest addition to the Z Workstation series is the HP Z200 Workstation, an affordable and powerful work horse. In addition, HP also introduced the HP EliteBook 8540w mobile workstations with DreamColor displays that set a new standard for mobile productivity with a true colour display and intense graphics performance.

All new HP Workstations are preloaded with HP SkyRoom, a HD videoconferencing software which enables students to collaborate and work in teams for real-time exchange of ideas and information.

Unlocking opportunities for students with special needs

Helping students with special needs overcome their challenges, the HP TouchSmart 9100 Business PC leverages ‘touch’ to accelerate learning, facilitate group participation, and unlock their ability to communicate so that they can do the same things and play the same games as typical students.

HP’s TouchSmart PCs are currently being used in Hope Technology School, where 40 percent of the students have developmental differences such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Down Syndrome, learning differences, speech disorders and emotional challenges. The benefits of the integration of touch with technology can be a new lifeline to the world for these students. For example, children with autism or speech impediments use the built-in camera to practice speaking which allows them to see as well as hear themselves speak— an advantage that teachers say in some cases has sped verbal progress from months to days.
