HP Fortify Empowers Customers to Fend off Threats from Mobile Applications
SAN FRANCISCO, April 21, 2015 — Today HP announced a new offering that will help its customers manage their Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) policies more intelligently by providing a fully-integrated mobile application reputation database within the HP Fortify on Demand cloud-based portal. All customers of HP Fortify, HP‘s innovative application security portfolio, can now request free reputation and behavioral analysis of company-owned mobile applications or those found in major app stores worldwide.
According to Gartner, by 2017 half of employers will require employees to supply their own device, thus exacerbating the need for more stringent security policies1. The introduction and use of third-party applications can compromise the security of an enterprise’s infrastructure. Even mobile applications developed in house have the potential to leak sensitive employee information and company data. By offering an easy way to analyze and whitelist or blacklist mobile applications, HP Fortify gives organizations more control over potential threats to their proprietary information.
“With BYOD becoming mainstream, organizations face the challenge of secure company-owned applications as well as those being used and deployed by employees,” said Jason Schmitt (@raidschmitt), vice president and general manager, HP Security (@HPsecurity), Fortify. “As many as 80 percent of mobile applications unintentionally make us more vulnerable, 2 so byoffering free behavioral analysis and an easy way to whitelist or blacklist mobile apps, we empower our customers, not just mobile app developers,to fend off potential threats.”
The service, which combines multiple privacy and behavioral checks along with reputation analysis of traffic endpoints, is free for all HP Fortify customers. In addition to obtaining access to the growing reputation database of widely-used and customer requested applications, customers can simply request a scan that:
- Checks to see how data is stored, accessed and transferred to identify potential sensitive data leaks
- Identifies potential security vulnerabilities, such as SQL injection, that can open an application to attack
- Performs analysis on the reputation of all network and application traffic endpoints to determine if they are known malicious hosts or have a low reputation score
