Hosts files can be used to manually add multiple systems to the HP Systems Insight Manager database.
To add these systems for a scheduled Automatic Discovery, add the Hosts file name to the Ping inclusion ranges section on the Automatic Discovery - General Settings page. Use the following statement:
$Hosts_filename
To return to the Automatic Discovery - General Settings page, click Automatic Discovery at the top of the page.
Click Add System at the top of the page to access the Manual Discovery - Add System page. Refer to Discovery - Adding a System Manually for more information on adding a single system to the database.
 |  | Creating a Hosts File |
To create a Hosts file: Select Options Discovery Manual Discovery. The Manual Discovery - Add System page is displayed. Click Hosts Files at the top of the page. Click [New]. The New Hosts File section is displayed. In the Hosts file name field, enter a name for the new Hosts file. This is a required field. Under Initialize contents with, select one of the following:
Empty File. Enter contents into the Contents window.
Systems loaded from the central management server, sorted by:. Select either IP address, System name, System type and then by IP address, or System type and then by system name.
Systems loaded from hosts file. Enter the file name and location (for example, c:\ doc.txt) or click [Browse] to browse to the location of the Hosts file.
If you did not select Empty File, click [Initialize Now] to load the Hosts file. Otherwise, enter the contents of the Hosts file in the Contents section. Click [OK] to save the Hosts file, or click [Cancel] to cancel any changes you have made.

To edit an existing Hosts file: Select Options Discovery Manual Discovery. The Manual Discovery - Add System page is displayed. Click Hosts Files at the top of the page. In the Hosts file name column, select the Hosts file to edit. Click [Edit]. The Edit Hosts File section is displayed. In the Replace contents with section, select one of the radio buttons and click Replace Now or
enter the changes in the Contents section. Refer to the section called “Creating a Hosts File”, step 2, for more information on the radio buttons.
Click [OK] to save changes, or click [Cancel] to not save any changes.

Only delete Hosts files if you no longer need them or if you are creating a new Hosts file. To delete a Hosts file: Select Options Discovery Manual Discovery. The Manual Discovery - Add System page is displayed. Click Hosts Files at the top of the page. In the Hosts file name column, select one or more Hosts files to delete. Click [Delete]. In the dialog box, click [OK] to delete the Hosts file, or click [Cancel] to cancel the delete process.

To add system in Hosts file to HP Systems Insight Manager: Select Options Discovery Manual Discovery. The Manual Discovery - Add System page is displayed. Click Hosts Files at the top of the page. In the Hosts file name column, select an existing Hosts file Click [Add Systems Now].
HP Systems Insight Manager reads in the Hosts file and adds the systems.
