Tulsa Public Schools
State's Largest School District Selects Hewlett-Packard

December, 1998

Until mid-1997, Tulsa Public Schools had invested little time or money in technology. However, by early 1999, Tulsa Public Schools will complete the installation of 10,000 HP desktop PCs, 350 HP Omnibook notebook computers, 225 HP NetServers and hundreds of HP printers and scanners. Tulsa Public Schools standardized on HP products in order to:

  • maximize productivity throughout the administrative offices
  • minimize the need for service and support in computer labs and among faculty
  • and, most importantly, to take advantage of HP's Manageability.
"Manageability" was critical in Tulsa's vendor decision. HP's Manageability features encompass both the lowest total cost of ownership as well as the user's ability to manage all PC products from one central console. HP TopTools provides basic network management, efficient inventory capabilities, data protection, hardware diagnostics, crash and virus protection and fault nd security management.

As the largest school district in Oklahoma, Tulsa Public Schools includes 80 schools and three administrative facilities. Tulsa Public Schools also has a primary MIS department for their main computer lab where they've deployed a number of HP NetServers. With the current purchases, each classroom in every school received 1-3 HP PCs, an HP printer and an HP scanner. In addition, every school received 1-3 HP NetServers and 10-20 HP PCs, a few printers and scanners for each of the school's computer labs. Finally, each of the three administrative facilities received between 200 and 500 HP PCs such that every Tulsa Public School employee had their own PC for personal use. Each administrative facility also received a number of HP printers and scanners for use throughout their buildings.

According to Terry Laster, the Chief Technology Officer of Tulsa Public Schools, the partnership between HP and his school has been excellent. "We believe in HP and know that their products will perform well and last long under the extensive use of K-12 students. HP backs up their products with solid service and support, a knowledgeable and helpful reseller channel and the commitment to a long-term customer relationship."
