There is a lot of press given these days to recycling products that are in perfectly good condition. For example, auto makers such as Toyota and Lexus offer Factory-Certified Used vehicles as part of their extensive portfolio of cars and trucks. There is no reason, therefore, why technology shouldn't fit into this category of Factory-Certified Used products.

We at HP have adopted this incentive. We have taken an extensive portfolio of equipment that has been returned to HP for one reason or another, representing current state-of-the-art HP technology, and have Factory-Certified it to be good as new, equal in performance to new, and without distinction, on par with new. We even return it to its same-as-new warranty status. We call this incentive the HP Renew Program. And except for its lower cost, you wouldn't know it was used because HP Renew guarantees it to look, act, and perform, just like new. The benefit to you: Lower cost and equal performance for state-of-the-art, HP Factory-Certified technology.

So what is "remanufactured"?

At HP, a remanufactured solution is offered on just about all product lines from printers to business PCs to high end enterprise products. They are products that have been returned to HP for a variety of reasons and then put through a rigorous remanufacturing process to bring them back to "same as new" condition and performance.

The enterprise product portfolio offered in the HP Renew Program includes:

•  HP Business Critical Servers, including Superdome
•  HP Storage solutions and infrastructure
•  HP Industry Standard Servers

Where do remanufactured products come from?

HP remanufactured enterprise products can originate from a variety of sources, including:

Customer returns and cancelled orders – Fully-functional products that leave the HP warehouse and therefore can no longer be sold as new
Demonstration and trial equipment – Products have been provided to customers for demonstration purposes
Factory or reseller overstocks – Items that are returned by the seller to make room for newer product lines
Factory loaner equipment – Products that have been used for purposes such as trade shows, customer events, or solution centers and have been returned to HP
Trade-in programs – Products customers have returned in order to upgrade to new HP technology

These products are not old, out-of-date machines. Rather, more than 80 percent of HP Renew Program offerings are less than a year old, and often the latest technology becomes available through HP Renew shortly after its introduction. The only difference (besides their lower cost) is that these products have, for one reason or another, left HP warehouses and can no longer be sold as new.

How is a product remanufactured?

Remanufactured HP products undergo a rigorous process to completely restore them to their original factory condition and performance. Every enterprise product in the HP Renew portfolio is thoroughly tested to ensure that they meet the same stringent standards as new products, and once verified, they are backed by a full HP warranty. In addition, service and support options are equivalent to that offered with new HP products and the most current software revisions are installed.

When is remanufactured better?

If your IT budget is lean, then HP remanufactured enterprise products can offer a high quality, fully warranted solution at a low cost. For some applications, the latest, greatest technology is a must. In other cases, a remanufactured product is simply a better choice. For example:

Companies may not always require the very latest technology or want to keep pace with short technology lifecycles
Your company has a need to maintain or extend a proven, stable environment and "new" production on that platform has been discontinued
A new product that is out of stock or constrained may be immediately available from the extensive worldwide inventory of enterprise remarketed products
Mixing and matching new HP products with remanufactured products optimizes IT budgets while ensuring HP quality, reliability and performance for future growth
Remanufactured equipment may offer the best price/performance value for a training room
Software testing may be performed just as effectively using remanufactured products as with new

What should I look for when I buy remanufactured?

There are a number of things to keep in mind when you buy a remanufactured enterprise product. Here are a few tips:

Buy directly from the manufacturer – Be sure your product was remanufactured by the original manufacturer. Brokers looking to recoup losses may refurbish a product cheaply and resell it without an adequate warranty or return policy. Buying directly from HP or an authorized HP dealer ensures that your product has been remanufactured and tested to meet stringent HP standards.
Check the warranty – Does your seller guarantee the quality of its remanufactured products? Remanufactured enterprise products in the HP Renew portfolio are covered by the full original HP warranty equivalent to new products.
Ask about return policies – If for any reason, you are unsatisfied with your remanufactured product, HP provides a no questions asked return policy.
Check the software, service, and support options – Can I put the equipment on my service contract? Is the software legally licensed? Will the products come with the latest firmware and most current software revisions? Service and support options for remanufactured enterprise products are equivalent to those offered with new HP products and the most current software revisions and firmware upgrades are installed.
