The sports photos I've taken—as a professional photographer and a mom—are some of my proudest shots. They were also some of the trickiest photos to capture. Today I'll show you some easy ways to get impressive, professional-looking sports photos you'll want to show off. No matter what type of sports photos you're shooting, don't be shy about getting into position. You will need to get as close as possible to your subject, and be sure you get down at that level of the action for winning results. This photo would be much less exciting if I had been standing five feet further away when I shot it. One of the biggest challenges in sports photography is capturing motion. Your subjects aren't exactly going to stop and pose for you. So you have to find a way to compensate for that. First off, avoid the shutter lag. This is the lag time between when you press the shutter button down and when the camera actually captures the photo. Even if it's only a second, you could miss the perfect shot. To avoid shutter lag, press the shutter button halfway down. This allows your camera to focus and make other adjustments. When you're ready to catch the shot, push it all the way down. The camera should fire right away, or at least react much faster. Now you're ready to take some photos. There are two camera settings that are going to be key to getting the pictures you want: action mode and burst mode. Action mode uses a fast shutter speed (the time your camera needs to take a picture) and it's ideal for getting detailed photos of subjects in motion. Without it, moving subjects can appear blurry in photos. Burst mode typically takes several pictures in a quick succession. This is a great feature when you want to show the progression of an event. Or you can use it to take a series of shots to increase your chances of getting the perfect one. And, if all three look great, you can frame them together in a sequence. The effect is amazing! A fantastic feature in my HP Photosmart camera is the Steady Photo feature. It helps avoid blur in photos, caused by either subject motion or camera shake and it's especially useful if you're zooming in on a subject from a distance. Keep in mind that capturing a great sports moment doesn't have to mean action. Portraits of your children in their uniforms or sports gear also tell a great story. Besides, they're absolutely adorable. Shoot a few photos both before and after the big game, especially if they win-you'll be sure to get a great smile. So there you go: Some easy ways to bring energy and excitement to sports photos. That's what it's all about, right? Well, that's all for now and I'm Tracey Clark. See you next time. |
