Introduction

Knowing how to use your printer’s print settings can help you save money, conserve ink, and get the best prints possible. We’ll show you how to manually select options like paper type, photo quality, and more.

NOTE: This article provides instructions for how to use printer settings on an HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One photo printer. It also provides examples for both Mac and PC/Windows systems, which have different menu interfaces. While basic photo printer settings (like paper type) are fairly standard features on old and new HP printers, you’ll want to consult your manual for more specific information for your printer model.

HP Auto Sense

HP Auto Sense-enabled printers are designed to detect Auto Sense marks on the back of select HP paper.

HP's automatic paper sensing technology, HP Auto Sense, adjusts your basic print settings automatically, taking the guesswork out of selecting the correct settings. It also saves you time, effort, and the expense of wasted ink and paper from printing by trial and error.

However, if you prefer to customize your print settings yourself, you can override the automatic settings and manually choose the settings yourself using the instructions below.

To get the highest quality photo prints, it's important to make sure your print settings coordinate with the size, weight, texture, and finish of your paper.

Maximum dpi printer setting screen

If Maximum dpi is not listed in the Print Quality drop-down list, you can usually enable it from the Advanced tab

Your HP printer is made to work with HP inks and photo papers. And it is made to use more or less ink depending on what type of HP paper you're using. For best results, adjust the paper settings each time you change paper sizes or paper types.

  • Paper size - In the Paper size area, select the appropriate paper size. If the paper size and paper type are not compatible, the printer software will display an alert and allow you to select a different type or size.
  • Paper type - In the Basic Options area, select a high print quality, such as Best, from the Print Quality drop-down list.
  • Draft - This setting lets you print faster and use less ink. The print color will be lighter, but this mode is perfect for drafts and everyday printing.
  • Normal - Use this mode for the highest-quality documents.
  • Best mode - Use this setting to produce the highest-quality photos.
  • Maximum dpi - To achieve the highest dpi resolution, you can use the Maximum dpi setting with supported types of HP photo paper.

Printer shortcuts

Access your most used printer settings with one click using Printer Shortcuts.

You can easily select the appropriate options for photo printing by choosing one of the predefined print tasks on the Printing Shortcuts tab.

  • Click a type of print task in the Presets/Printing Shortcuts list.
  • The default settings for that type of print task are set and summarized on the Printing Shortcuts tab.
  • You can adjust the settings here and save your custom settings as a new printing shortcut.

To delete a shortcut, select the shortcut and click Delete.

Printing borderless photos

Borderless photo example

Borderless photo printing allows the ink to go all the way to the edges of the photo paper, with no margins.

Most HP Photosmart photo printers and All-in-Ones offer borderless printing.

  • Borderless photos are printed without a white border around the perimeter of the photo. You get beautiful photo prints with no trimming!
  • Just select Borderless printing from the advanced/additional photo print menus and check the box if it is not already checked.
  • If the borderless paper size and paper type are not compatible, the product software will display an alert and allow you to select a different type or size.
