Cropping a photo

Introduction

Cropping is a simple technique that takes minutes to learn and can improve every photo you take. Here are two reasons to crop:
  • Eliminate clutter and distractions
Remove unwanted elements like a stray pop can in the background or a mysterious elbow (like in the “Before” photo above). Anything that doesn’t add to your photo is just a distraction.
  • Showcase your subject
Cropping in closer on your photo’s main subject creates a more powerful image.

Three ways to crop your digital photos

Close up of a photo on the camera screen
Option One:
In your camera

Before you take your picture, stop and think about the story you are trying to tell. Then decide what the focal point of the picture is.

Crop as close as you can, either by physically moving closer to your subject or using your camera’s zoom feature.

Option Two:
In your printer

With an HP Photosmart photo printer or All-in-One like the HP Photosmart D7560 you can zoom in or out on a specific area of a photo and crop your image using the printer’s touchscreen display—all without a PC!

Option Three:
With photo-editing software

Use Windows Live Photo Gallery to crop your digital photos.

Just select the photo you want to crop, click Fix in the toolbar at the top of screen, and select Crop from the photo editing menu. You’ll be presented with a variety of options for easily cropping your photos.

Find step-by-step instructions to crop photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery.
