Why pet eye happens

A dog Red-eye is caused when light from your camera's flash reflects off the retina of your subject's eyes. It is a very common problem that even pros face. "Pet eye" usually occurs when you photograph an animal in a dim environment using a flash.

Pet eye fix

A photo of a pet with green eye removed The latest version of HP Photosmart Essential makes it even easier to remove pet eye thanks to a new magnification tool.

Simply move your cursor over the photo to display the magnification tool. Hover the target in the center of the tool over the pet eye instance you want to fix and then click.

Preventing pet eye

There are a few proven strategies for avoiding pet eye:
  • Turn off your camera's flash.
  • If it's too dark to go without a flash, try to take your picture with your animal not looking directly at the lens, if possible.
  • By taking photos during the day, you'll most likely eliminate the need for a flash.
  • If necessary, bring in additional light sources.
  • Stand farther away from your subject.
