Importing photos from your digital camera

Images from digital cameras can be downloaded easily using free HP Photosmart Essential software and then stored into selected folders on your computer. Even after you disconnect your camera, the images are still safe and secure on your computer. Images can be copied from a:

  • Digital camera that's connected to your computer
  • Printer or all-in-one that has a memory card inserted
  • Card reader that's attached to your computer with a memory card inserted

But for now, let's focus on the camera.

Step 1: Connect your digital camera to a PC

Make sure your camera is off, and then connect it to your computer. Also make sure your camera is configured to show up as a remote drive to your PC so the HP Photosmart Essential software can access it.

Want to save your batteries? Plug in with an AC adapter while you're downloading pictures. Or, you can dock your camera and simply press the button.

Step 2: Bring up the View tab

Launch HP Photosmart Essential and then click Get Images from the dropdown menu on the View tab.

Step 3: Get Images from camera

Select "From Camera, Card Reader or Printer ..." from the drop-down menu.
The Image Copy Wizard appears.

Step 4: Follow the step-by-step onscreen directions

Step 5: Select the photos you want

In the Image Copy Wizard, all images on the camera will automatically be selected and copied to the computer. You can deselect individual images or all images. An easy way to select a group of images quickly and simultaneously is to use Shift-Click.

You can name the group of images, preview ones to copy, and even change the date associated with the images. But remember, changing the date of the initial image will change all the subsequent images relative to that date.

Once you click the Copy button, the import begins...

Did you know?

HP Photosmart Essential software will start an initial scan for images the first time you launch the program. It will automatically look for photos located on your computer in the "My Pictures" directory and its subdirectories, then place a shortcut in the View Images list to where each of the images is found. You can cancel the initial scan at any time.

HP Photosmart Essential will look in the My Pictures directory and subdirectories for new photos with each initial launch.
